We may laugh now but with those shorts, that haircut, and that bike, I'm pretty sure Paulie was scoring more high-qual pussy than any of us did in the 80s, with the possible exception of Tom Cruise of course :witless: Also, I've already got my tix to see Paulie perform at the Hall and Oates concert in Orlando on June 9th with special guests Tears for Fears :glee:

If by "squid" you mean someone who isn't afraid of falling off their bike at 25 mph on a hot sunny day while cruising a mile or two in the suburbs to the local burger joint - than yes, I'm guilty as charged. If I'm commuting to work or going on a weekend blast with 100 mph wheelies (j/k) than yes I gear up with armored jacket, reinforced pants, helmet, gloves, and boots. You should see the crazy bikers doing high speed stunts with little to no gear on I-4 between Daytona and Orlando during Bike Week and Biketoberfest - some scary stuff. Those are the riders that I would label a "squid".

That said, all of us, by choosing to ride a motorcycle, accept the very real risk of becoming road pizza. But even in a cage, private jet, or speed boat you are at risk - just ask Paul Walker, Payne Stewart and Jose Fernandez. Even engineless activities such as riding horseback, skiing and surfing are very risky as I'm sure Christopher Reeve, Michael Schumacher, and Mark Foo would agree.

My point is everyone has a different level of risk averseness. I stopped worrying a long time ago about what other people might call me (although if you call me a "progressive" I might have to fight you - LOL). When I get to the point where I'm worried about riding to the post office a 1/4 mile away in shorts than for me personally it will probably be time for me to find a nice retirement home in Arizona to move to. I could get myself a three wheeled tricycle to pedal around on like my Grandma used to ride :glee:

There are rules, protocalls and financial considerations that deal with squid and squids.

It is not wise to frequent places of social activity where members of the US Navy congregate, and make rude comments about squids. This is particularly meaningful if such personnel are Combat Teams or Seal Teams.

Squid used to be aboot a peso a pound or less. Now its Calamari and its two pesos a pound.

Do not fuck with certain squid. In particular the Humbolt Squid that can weigh up to 50 pounds and are cannibalistic to boot.

So watching Tom Cruise and his stuntman ride around California on his Ninja in the vid I posted above without a helmet got me curious - wasn't he violating the mandatory helmet law in California? Turns out California was one of the LAST states to adopt a mandatory helmet law - it wasn't required there until January 1st, 1992 - so therefore Tom was not in violation of the law when filming Top Gun (I think it was around 1985). That said, I do think Tommy Boy should have been wearing a helmet when racing an F-14 :glee: However, I concur with his decision to leave the helmet off for the midnight ride to the marina with Kelly McGillis riding bitch - I would have loved to have had her nibble on my ear like that while giving her a ride (although I think she has since turned into a fat lesbian!).

In contrast, Florida and many other states at that point had already had a mandatory helmet law for 25 years! (since 1967) In fact, many states had already repealed their mandatory helmet laws by the time California finally got around to enacting one. I wonder what took them so long? These days they're known as one of the most highly regulatory states in the nation - I would have thought they would have been one of the first states to have enacted a mandatory helmet law. I think the U.S. gov't had tied federal highway funds to states adopting mandatory helmet laws in the late 60's, so there must have been a really large opposition to the helmet law in Cali for the state to have foregone all that money for so many years.

If anyone else is interested in this topic here's a link to a chart showing the mandatory helmet law history in the USA: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/topics/laws/helmetuse/helmethistory

Cruise is actually wearing a helmet. It's a carbonfibre reinforced toupee.

It has been said that Kelly was straight and after attending a few Scientology sessions with Cruise she crossed over to the other side and started pigging oot on Skittles.

What might be interesting since military bases are federal, if helmets were mandatory in that timeframe.

Hey Greg, so you gotta come up with some story for your injury - like you burned it while extracting a group of kids from a burning school bus, or something... ;)

LMAO. You make excellent points as usual BB - I hadn't even thought about the federal military base aspect! But assuming for the sake of argument that there WAS a mandatory helmet law on military bases in 1985, what about the fact that he was probably just sitting on a bike that was being pulled behind a trailer for that F-14 racing scene? If he took off his helmet-toupee, would he still be in violation? :glee:

    Jerry Seinfeld on helmets:

And yes, I'll admit that I rode without a helmet quite a few times before it became law here in CA - never without gloves or shoes though... apparently I wasn't intelligent enough to recognize what needed protecting most... lol

LOL - Jerry's awesome. Reminds me of Carlin talking about guys who wear helmets on a bicycle :glee: (warning: strong language as one would expect from Carlin).

Yeah I'm actually looking forward to seeing them more than Hall & Paulie, I mean Hall & Oates :glee: I've already seen H & O twice (albeit back in the 80's) but I've never seen Tears for Fears. I hope I'm wearing pants if I should ever go "head over heels" on my VFR :witless:

They were in 1990, I don't know about 1986, but I think they were. But by 1990 you had to have full gear on naval and marine bases -- helmet, gloves, long pants, and an orange vest, according to the Navy regs.

Cranking in the Hollywood factor Cruise would not be cited. The Navy fast guys might get cited but minor citations on military bases can sometimes go bye-bye with a phone call from the a guy with the stars on his shoulders.

Once that F-14 was airborne the race was over for Cruise, the bike, the hauler and the guy with the fan for his toupee.

funny thread - I got a YSR50 all clapped out with Team Calamari stuff, don't try to twist "clapped-out" into some sordid thing oh-tay. Should have had my neighbor in NJ teach me how to cook squid in its own ink before I moved down here. Its still a regret, along with some flea market/garage sale regrets.

I was in CA when they adopted a helmet law, I was staying in China Town and I remember someone committing suicide because of it; by comparison, the state of FL rescinded the helmet law, one of the major players who was some sort of harley woman ended up dying from a motorcycle accident not too soon after, whether a brain bucket would have saved her bacon (who-knows.)

So I was at Sam's Club this morning and saw this beauty on sale! It's exactly what I need to simplify my life so I can safely ride to the gym, post office, and burger joint in my Hawaiian shirt and flip flops and without fear of scalding my leg - this way you guys won't have to worry about me anymore :glee: Does anyone know where I can buy one of those American flags on a stick to put on the back :witless:
