So I was chatting with a county Deputy today and asked her if she was jealous of the Florida State Troopers since they get to drive the Hemi Chargers. She said no because her Ford Police Interceptor was more comfortable and actually faster than the Hemi Charger which surprised me. So I looked it up and she's right, the turbo V6 equipped Interceptor is a bit faster both 0-60 and in the quarter mile according to this cop car comparo test by MotorTrend:

Not really surprising. Those chargers are like 4000+ pounds. Probably pushing well over 4500 after they get done with the bull bar and all the other police trinkets.

Any data on the 5.7 litre Hemi V8 Chargers?

CHP had a few Bill Stroppe prepped Chargers in the 1970s that were racecars with LEO farkles.

So, did the nice lady ask for your autograph? ;)

Cops with a 150 MPH car are as bad as high school kids with one. Local state po po murdered (IMO) a sport bike rider by chasing him at over 130. Yeah the rider was breaking the law big time but why not let him kill himself, or more likely let him go and he would have slowed down at some point. Simple arithmetic tells me that two vehicles doing 130 are twice as dangerous as one going 130. Are high speed chases really worth it? Very arguable.

...and this from a dude who reminds everyone with almost every post he's a fast guy. Then again, the double nickel is fast if you ride a Harley..

Why do police pursue a murderer, it's obvious there is a higher risk of one of them being killed. Why not just let him go? He will stop murdering at one point.

Yes but the Interceptor was actually HEAVIER than the Dodge by 152 pounds (Ford 4,413 - Dodge 4,261).

The Interceptor has the advantage of AWD and better gearing (6spd v. 5spd) which explains why it blows the Charger away 0-60. I notice though that the trap speed was slightly higher for the Hemi in the 1/4 mile, so even though the Interceptor had a quicker time in the quarter the Hemi was gaining on it fast.

This has been a big controversy in Florida with many tragic deaths to innocent bystanders resulting from questionable decisions to engage in high speed pursuits. There are decent arguments on both sides but I think the rule now is to NOT pursue at a high speed (whatever that means?) unless the person is suspected of a violent felony or something along those lines.

Only State Troopers will chase a bike here and even then most will back off once they pass 100 sustained. They say the radio or Darwin will catch them most times.

Oh and the 5.8 sec 0-60 is pretty respectable for the Ford, but it ain't faster than my HEMI. I've run a best of 4.9 sec when the stars aligned,
and run consistent 5.2 sec, traction is an issue. :smile-new:

I thinks a little homework will indicate that most law enforcement has rules in place addressing high speed pursuits.

Kind of vague on which of the Dodge's was being referred to in the conversation with the lady cop..I found that the V8 model so far as use by CHP was limited to instructor vehicles at the Sacramento,CA facility.

Then we "drift" into who is driving in those quarter mile and 0-60 tests.

All in all, Darwin was right!

I was referring to the Chargers that the FHP State Troopers drive, like this. I could be wrong but I think most of them have the Hemi (do the ones with a HEMI have a "badge" - see what I did there? :glee: ). Sadly, I think I read somewhere that the Hemi engines are made in Mexico.

Well this thread didn't go exactly as I expected, being that the VFR was called the Interceptor for a number of years lol.

Ridiculous blaming the police. If a rider chooses to take off on the police that's their decision. You're attitude is no different from the guy stopped driving drunk who blames the bartender for giving him drinks.

It's ridiculous until the officer is the one that gets into an accident. The speeding police cruiser is likely far more dangerous to bystanders than a speeding motorcycle...
