If you're a bug, chickens are birds of prey.

I'll chip in and ditto all the kudos for the vicarious ride adventure. I'm curious though, what keeps you planted in Kansas Jen? My impression is that it's a rather vanilla kind of place, especially for someone with such an adventurous spirit.

Well living on the Isle of Man which is 32 miles x 14 miles I can tour the whole island before breakfast ! Lol
However, the purpose of me buying the VFR last year with all the luggage was to do some touring, so the first tour is currently being planned, a week long tour around Scotland, watch this space !

I'd love to set something up. But wouldn't want ridiculous publicity.
I am going to get out of vanilla Kansas and need help/ideas on how to do it.

I was born and raised here, but multiple people all my life have said I don't seem to belong here. Yep. They be right. But, my family has had tragedy and I really need to stay planted here a bit longer to make sure things are good for the ones I love before I leave.

Plus I'm graduating in May with muh masters, so I have to be here to walk and be hooded!! Then leave the next week for Alaska prize. ❤

Just plan it and make it happen .... you don't have to be a month on the road to have an adventure.

Great write up, A.M. You're an inspiration. Makes me realize I need to get off my duff and just jump on the bike now & then to head out, turn anywhere, and see where I end up.
I'd be willing to bet you could find a way to get paid for your bike adventures if you really wanted to. Maybe freelance articles to some moto magazines. In any case, thanks for showing the rest of how to get it done.

I am planning to retire Aug or Sept 2020 and my first trip will be from Toronto to Watkins Glen labour day weekend ( I almost always go to the bmw rally) and from there I plan on a leisurely ride along route 66 to Santa Monica pier, spend a week in CA and decide my return trip once I get there

I could spend years riding in the Washington state Cascades and not hit the same road twice.

Pure awesomeness! Besides the darn wind, I too love riding year round as long as the temps are somewhat descent. Lots respect to you for making the solo adventure, especially in winter! Glad things turned out all good with the skunk. Thanks for sharing.

I would suggest landing at one of the smaller airports near Santa Monica. LAX is pretty much for the big boys. Landing on the pier might be doable but I doubt the FAA or the City of Santa Monica would allow it. Just in case you can plug this into the avionics package. Hope this helps.

Sounds like a super and classic ride planned!! Route 66 has some neat things along the way!! What will you be riding?

I hope you might come through Kansas! Maybe I can run part way with you!

I'm hoping to spend a couple days up there before entering Canada this summer. Possibly ride around with a few of you there. :)

Sounds like I'll need to make more time another time for Washington.

Ha! Just woke after flying on the Viffer again. In a dream. Perfect. Now I'll go back to sleep and be able to properly navigate a landing. Not a bad destination!

So, AM, serious question here.....at what speed do you usually move along on those loooonnnnnggggg stretches of highway in the middle of nowhere to get some ground covered? Just curious. You can always take the 5th if an undercover traffic cop is here ; ) On a 20 mile stretch of 4 lane I'm forced to be on to get to one of my fav. riding mountains, I generally do 90+ mph just to get it over with.

It depends on factors like road conditions, traffic, weather, time of day, etc...but I take the posted speed into account because most of the time it's there for a reason.

Sometimes it seems unreasonable to have to go 40 when the road can clearly handle 90...but maybe there are blind intersections and people need time to react.

What gets me angsty are max speed limits posted on long stretches just because it's the max allowed by a state or province.

Where posted limits can be 85 mph in South Dakota...same road conditions in Canada only allow 55 mph (that's understandable because of weather/animal conditions, but it would be great to have different allowable speed limits for fine weather and small animal risk).

That's when it gets grueling and I just pump up the music and do other things to cut boredom...like dancing, experimenting with riding positions, making a game with tar snakes or other road conditions, counting things, making up a song or poem, practice swerving by pretending to dodge imaginary critters, etc.

In good conditions I generally do 10 over...which around here is between 70 to 85. Usually there is someone who is going faster than that out on the long flat roads that I piggy back on...at least 100+...then I feel like I am actually moving, but not unsafely. 120 to me feels like 80 in a car.

My adrenaline never starts pumping on straights where I've open the throttle all the way. I just laff and have fun and wish I could go faster. I hit the same indicated and sustained max speed several times on a recent trip and have always been left with wanting more. Prolly a good thing I don't have a liter moto.

On highway stretches with no traffic or dangerous intersecrions and with amazing pavement, I'll do that several times a trip. But I have to be able to see for miles, only in daylight, so I'm able to cut it in time if I come upon another vehicle.

Long answer I know, but I just can't say I go 100+ all the time and that be it. Lots of factors and responsibility in decision-making has to be there for my safety as well as others. Basically not being stoopid.

Some stretches if it's 70, I go 75 because the road is heavily monitored. Even though that same type of road and road surroundings can legally be traveled at 90 in another state. I don't need trouble on a trip, especially out of country.

This one that I was pulled over because of a state limit on County roads was disappointing since I was traveling at speeds better for me and moto in the high wind conditions.

I was away from all traffic and bypassing the small towns with 30 mph limits where debris was flying through city streets like a tornado was approaching.

One thing that is always a constant, for me who likes to go FAST, I practice immense amounts of self-control the majority of the time I'm out on the open road.

I have yet to ride Florida.

I hope to unofficially iron butt it in early August to Key West. When I do I'll have ridden 49 states after this summer...so I'm pretty motivated to do it.

If you be around we be speedy together! ;)
