    Hi guys,
Just signed up as I'm new to VFR ownership due to inheriting my father's 1988 VFR750F-J. I've been on 2 wheels for years but on very different machines to this one, though I've had a couple of Honda's in the past; an MBX50 and a C90!, though more recently I've been riding and maintaining a 1964 Innocenti Lambretta 150 Special. Just thought I'd say hello!

Right I've added a picture to my photo gallery (I think). I had thebattery off to charge it up but it's knackered do I started it with a booster thing. It was only running on 2 cylinders and occasionally back-fired on another, and sometimes picked up a bit and ran on 3 or something? Anyway, new plugs, new battery, plus fork seals as one of them has gone too. I just hope it doesn't turn into a money-pit as I've got enough of those with the Lammy! Can anyone see the picture?

Yes - it's in your gallery - very nice. If you click on the little photo icon while doing a post and then paste the URL of your photo that's in your gallery and then uncheck the "retrieve..." button and then post it will display it right here like I've done below. Alternatively, you can also hit the "manage attachments" button and attach a pic to a post that way.

If the bike has been sitting a while, there may be issues you'll have to deal with. Consider that it is 29 freaking years old!
BUT: When running right, you'll quickly forget all about some worries and work to get it going well.
The big advantage in joining in here is the knowledge base. You'll likely find a solution to each and every problem you may run across.

Although sorry to hear the reason you became a VFR owner, I say welcome!

How long has it been since it ran properly ??

Carbs may need a good cleaning to get firing on all 4.

It's been a good few months at least. Probably hasnt been out on the road in over a year. I suspect it's going to be the carbs too as I made the schoolboy error of trying to start it with next to no fuel in thetank, so I think it's probably pulled all the crap into them from the bottom of the tank and blocked em up. Luckily I have a buddy with a sonic bath cleaner thing, I'm just hoping its big enough to fit the carb assembly thing in. cheers guys.

I agree with squirrelman, regarding the need for cleaning the carburetors. Anyone who has read my thread knows the battles I have had with those.

Right on! Give it a chance, great hwy bike, as well as a city bike. This is the high water mark for Japanese motorcycles. Actually, all motorcycles!

    Whoa there, laddie ! :cool-new:

Carbs can't be proppaly cleaned by dunking the whole set in like a baptism !

Instead, they must be stripped to bits b4 cleaning if you want to do a 100% job, but about 85% of carbs i've worked on from bikes just out of storage don't need much cleaning except for the idle jet. So the very quickest cleaning, after the float bowls are off, involves simply running a thin (0.10") steel wire through the slow/idle jets--which are the first things to clog or go wrong after a bike's been sitting awhile--and save hours of time taking things apart unnecessarily. If alot of sticky dark goo is found in the bowls, or anything green, the carbs will need a total strip down, bath, blow out with compressed air, then assembly and adjustment; but if bowls are clean, usually just cleaning out the slow jets fixes it easy and quick. A certain guitar wire is about .010"- .012", and if that slips into the slow jet to a depth of at least 2", the jet is clear and will get lagging cylinders the fuel need.

Probe wire into brass choke pick-up tube to a depth of 2", then blow out with air.

It's always best to flush out fuel tanks periodically to eliminate water, rust flakes, debris.

Thanks bud. Ive stripped and cleaned the carb on the scooter numerous times and altered jetting etc when neccessary e.g. when I fitted an expansion exhaust or changed the cylinder for a larger capacity one. To be honest I just poke them out with a strand of old brake cable or whatever, blast em through with carb cleaner and then blow them through with a bicycle pump with one of those little things for blowing up footballs on the end. This is the carb I use on the scooter:

The good thing is there's only one of them to deal with and it just connects to the inlet manifold with a rubber mount thing, looking at the pics above I dont think the VFR carbs will all go in the bath thing even in bits. I'll take them off and clean em as described and give it a try. The new plugs are in the post anyway so I'll do it all when they arrive, and I'll take a few pics as I go. Thanks again!

Might also try running some Seafoam thru the gas before yanking the carbs.
