To part, or not to part, that is the question?

I live in Fairhope, AL. 36532. I am willing to help as much as possible, meeting part way, etc. to facilitate the sale.

I will be in the Greenville, SC area with a trailer in the first week of March, at worst. Maybe Raleigh, NC as a rendezvous point?

Doesn't matter how much the cowl cost new. By 1996 they were made of pure unobtanium. You get a seat cowl, with no broken tabs, in that condition, and a collector is going to be willing to pay a couple hundred to get it.

I think I paid $70 for mine in 1994/1995 and it was literally the last one the dealer was ever able to get. Put it on because some girl was mad I had a red bike instead of the purple one (because chicks dig purple), so I wanted to be able to tell her there was no place for a girl on my bike. in the end it really made the line of the bike nicer.

Very few of us had them back then, and fewer as the years went on.

Parts or whole, that bike is still worth something to someone.

Damn I am in Vermont. That's a haul for a bike. Although first week in march that's tmac time. I already have a 93 and a 07 if this was a gen 4 hands down I would own it.
Let me think about it I need to decide what I can afford to do

I can't understand the aversion to California girls or even Italian girls. All the more for the rest of us. Ooorah! All the cowls were ABS plastic and by 1996 there were replica cowls available in both plastic and fiberglass. The fix on a busted tab on an original was easy. Even big cracks could be plastic welded or cemented. The hundred bucks quoted was MSRP in 1991. Not being the wheeler-dealer you claim to be I just did a trade and painted mine black after fixing it. Still black, on the bike and the latest version was done with genuine Harley-Davidson rattlecan wrinkle paint.

A great observation on the OPs bike. If followed in sequence the worth of the bike jumped from a low baller's 500 pesos to three K in just a few hours. Read quick because that bike will be gone skippy.

Can we assume you still have your old VFR ? Might be a few pesos for you in one too.

Could be..what could be done is to bring money.. Since a shitload of posts of recent are embellished by musical accompaniment, never let it be said in these hallowed halls that I did not do my part.

Another version is by Steve Miller. Great for making bets with dudes whose history of Rock and Blues only goes back to their own versions of "back in the day".

Yes, I still have my old bike. Maybe I should pop the rear wheel on the '01, just to make punters jealous over how many spokes I've got. Honestly, if it weren't for the price of swapping rubber from rim to rim, I would try it. I do like the gold color, just like I think the most recent wheels are some of the nicest looking Honda's ever made and the color looks great against white and red.

Anyway, my '91. It's a leaky bitch and it needs a clutch. I had it running, but 5 years ago it was parked because o-rings and hoses -- not meant to last 25 years unmaintained -- have gotten dry and unreliable. I need to get in there and change all of 'em. Life got in the way of the repairs, so it remained under its cover until I started planning to fix it up over the summer.

Then I got my 5th gen because the effort to make the old one good again was going to take a while and, frankly, when you can get into a 5th gen with 20K on the clock that looks nearly new on a $4K budget... it was just too tempting to be back on the road in the bike I really wanted but was too broken to ride when it was available in 2001.

I wasn't wheeling and dealing on the cowl. I literally called Milpitas Honda on a whim because a friend off the Compuserve VFR message board gave me a heads up that they had one in stock. I see shiny things and get fascinated, and I liked the solo seat look. Since Tracy was being a bitch, when she asked me "Where does the girl sit?" I just said "Sorry, hun, it's set up for one now." Then I let her pout and never let her know that the pillion seat was literally 2 screws and 2 minutes away.

You can have that California chica, by the way. WAY too far on the wrong side of the Vickie Mendoza diagonal, and it was all because of the crazy. I got off light with some hurt feelings, another layer of ice around the shriveled black lump where my heart should be, and excellent memories I can dredge up if I ever need to summon my inner misogynist. Then men she married REALLY suffered, then were destroyed by her.

Anyway, Within a couple of years everyone wanted a cowl and nobody could find an original one without busted tabs. More than once I got offered well over the $100 msrp for mine from someone who wanted the stock Honda item. Met someone a few weeks ago who is restoring a 92 and paid several hundred for a stock, like new, black cowl, which are rare as hen's teeth. Originals have cachet amongst folks like him, who are wanting an original again and are willing to look after every detail.

Taking a chica for a ride doesn't mean ya have to take her home to meet mom..

If you think paying even double for a seat cowl is anal, you have yet to meet some of the dudes who are really into restoration. Several in my club, including one that is starting on a Thor boardtracker. Big bucks guy.. I think the bike is the real thing maybe the only one left.

Dude, scrape the paint off one of the Honda cowls and they are black. Hey, a little spit and a little polish and voila' (not walla-walla) black is beautiful unless it's in the form of a moustache that some of those cute little Italian girls get at aboot 35..

I have been wondering the same thing with my '95. Needs a complete upper and mid fairing. Debating weather to part it out, build a custom God damnit or buy another one for 2k and have a parts bike.

    How much difference is there between a '98 vfr800 and a '95 vfr750f?

Alright, fellas, this is a fascinating convo, re: what was and wasn't available/standard on a VFR in the 1990s in NA vs the world, but let's get this bike sold!

On the upper inner left fairing there is a circle that some cut oot and install a volt meter. It was designed as a reserve petcock in the euro market, as opposed to our bikes which dont have a reserve set up/only on off. Also you have to pop the seat to turn the fuel off. I am ok with yhis us set up as it cleaner and less crap to break. The rear fender always gets hacked off, my 91 is unmolested, my 93 was cut. Its all good though

Yes, yes I do. I am trying my very best to herd you cats, and all the double entendre implied in that statement.

No one mentioned the kick stand fairing. I would go for one of those, i use the rear seat for a tail bag everytime i go out. Anyway, i feel fortunate to own what i got, especially those two gen3 bikes.

although I would love to have a 2nd 3rd gen at this point in time I cannot commit to buying this bike, in the process of selling off other toys ( just sold my 02 6 gen last night) only need 1 of every gen :). I hope you sell it to someone who will love it though.

if you still have it later in the year let me know I would do like $1200 for the complete bike, once I got it to VT would cost more than what I can buy local bikes for.

Lots, they are two different machines other than a bolt here and there head light bulbs, tires and the brake and clutch levers, nothing.

Thanks for giving it a serious think. I don't think I can do $1200. The tank, cowl and kickstand fairing alone are probably worth at least $800. I actually looked into shipping to VT in an enclosed hauler for you, and you're right about the price. That would be significant. Probably better for a buyer to be near driving distance, or at least I can meet them half way. I would still be willing to meet you somewhere like Raleigh, NC, if you change your mind. My trip is set for around the 15th of March at this point, as long as I can get back to Road Atlanta by that Friday the 17th.

That is a very generous offer. Are you sure you are on the right thread?
