I think EVERY kid that comes through your school, and especially those who are lucky enough to have you as a teacher, will grow to have much greater respect for the "Little Moments" that take your breath away.

Every Monday in my daughters grade 2 class, they have circle time in the morning where the kids all sit on the floor at the front of the class, and take turns sharing what they did that weekend. They talk about what they learned, what they did, who they were with, did they have fun, did they get scared, and why. None of the kids are forced to say anything if they don't want to, but my daughter,s teacher encourages them all to share a story. Almost all the kids share at least one story, sometimes more, and "class" doesn't start until everyone has had a chance to share their "moments".

One can only imagine what your students must be thinking when they walk back into class after a weekend or a long break like Christmas AM. "WOW, you went WHERE, on WHAT, and it was HOW COLD?"

How do you encourage a younger generation to "LIVE for LIFE"?? You give them a class room, with a teacher like AM. My hat is off to you AM, and I wish there were more people like you in this world.

Zoom-zoom...thank you for that...the reason I went into teachinges was to inspire children on a personal level to love themselves, feel special and important, and give them safety for a few hours a day in hopes that will be enough for their little hearts to wanna live life to the fullest someday despite challenges they endure...not as a NCLB number that needs to learn a ton of content (although important).

But if they are not enthralled with you, inspired by you, and feel you don't love them, you can't teach anything.

It's so strange you mention this. Yesterday we had a pep talk about talent. Some kids were down on themselves and I pulled out of all of them pride smiles and sharing of things they were good at...not curriculum...oops (not really).

When I was wrapping up the discussion, one kid asked what my talent is and another swiftly responded, "Her motorcycle!" Then of course the kids rallied together to beg me for another story. One boy said he's gonna buy me a new moto one day when he gets lots of money. He always says that. I believe him.

Anyhoo, if I make a mark on one kid as a teacher did for me when I was 8, I will have been successful. I knew since I was 8 that I'd be a teacher and "save" a kid. Just as that teacher knows what I've become, I hope at least one student comes to visit mev30 years from now cuz they made it...and rolling up with a new moto for me wouldn't be so bad either.

Sdouble...I took four years of French and used to be extremely fluent. Anne Marie was my French name I picked for the four years (requirement to rehandle ourselves with French name).

I loved riding to Gaspé and using my French I remembered. I figure if I spent a summer in France I'd gain most of it back. That's on muh list... :)

How much of a difference is there between Parisian French and Quebequois that they speak here? I assume one can understand the other? That may sound like a silly question but I do know that there is a considerable difference between the different dialects of the Chinese language. Someone who speaks Tisane (SP?) may not understand Mandarin who may not understand Cantonese yadda Yadda yadda.

My daughter is also an elementary school teacher. I knew from the time she was little she was going to be a teacher. Sounds a lot like you AM. Though she's not into motorcycling like I am she is an avid outdoors woman. Both her and my son have been hiking and climbing with me since they were little and continue to do it to this day. She uses our hiking and climbing adventures in her class every year. I'm a commercial photographer and videographer and give her thousands of photos through the years that she uses. The kids love the stories and she does as you do, get them to tell stories themselves almost every day.

Most of us are all for instilling confidence in the little guys in any situation. What is missing much of the time is structure evidenced by the inability of those little guys who are, all of a sudden, not so little any more and cannot read or do simple arithmetic.

In my public library recently, two girls about 12 or so asked the library attendant the time. There is a very large clock on the wall in view. Bottom line here is the girls could not read an analog clock.

For one who speaks Quebecois, I can tell you I've been answered in English while in Paris a few years ago... and I did take my time to speak slowly. Sure, we can understand each other, but if I lay it on thick, I can tell you some of my French pals do look at me funny.

They aren't that different. Milder than the difference between English and American English. Hell, maybe even milder than different accents inside the United Kingdom, where regional accents can still be pretty strong.

Dialectically, if you drew a contiuum from most different to least, Mandarin and Cantonese are different languages even though they are technically dialects, they're so far apart. Knowing Mandarin, you can't suss out Cantonese. Something like Portuguese is a completely different dialect between Brazil and Portugal, the accents are wildly different, so even though written Portuguese is probably understandable the two languages spoken sound nothing alike. Quebec and Paris are just different accents, for the most part. Far and away the most mild difference.

French is the a language where dialects are really frowned upon. Ever couple of years a group of people will meet in a French speaking country (which includes places like Vietnam, or locations in North Africa, as well as the obvious France and Canada) and they hammer out inconsistencies in French. For example, they hate appropriating terms from other languages so they change things like "E-mail" to "communication electronique." Anyway, though it sounds silly, it keeps French from separating into lots of divers dialects.

Interestingly a French speaking (American) friend is often chastised by our mutual friend from Montreal over his accent being Parisian. Seems the Quebeqois thinks that his accent is more "pure" to the French language. He is a linguist, which is why I know this shit, but he is also kind of snotty about it.

Tip muh hat to her...teaching is thankless many times but most teachers have that inner calling.
You saw it in her when she was little...

So it's pretty awesome that your adventures together are captured prolly stunningly through your work. Kids LOVE to see that! They have to see there is a world that exists out there and they can experience it...get out of their bubble of dysfunction on many cases...give them something to aspire to.

Way to go with her!! Tell her she's got another colleague in teaching out there that's a crazy adventurer trying to inspire kids!!

I see in my cards university level some day...but but for now, I'll keep mesmerizing the tykes. :)
