Front Fork: ATF or hyd. Fluid?

I'm doing front fork seals this weekend on my 84 700 Interceptor, the clymer book says I can use ATF or Hydraulic fluid. Transfluid is much easier to get my hands on, is there really make a difference?

You could use either of those, but I would stick to fork oil. I just don't see how ATF or Hydraulic fluid has the same properties that fork oil has.

 

i agree with vinny, and the ATF will make your seals leak a honda dealer told me one time so stick with fork oil ?

 

You can use either but fork oil would hold up the best .

 

ATF was the fluid of necessity back before there was specialty fork oil. The Dextron II, versus the "F" (Ford style) was the type to use. Ancient history now...

I agree with everyone else. Definitely fork oil. Oh, it seems to me that ATF is about 5W, if I remember right.

 

ATF is approximately 7.5w.

 

ATF is still used by Honda in some cars power steering systems. It's a higher detergent oil than engine oil. I've used it in several forks where the manual calls for it w/o any problem. If it says ATF, then I'd use ATF.
