Thoughts on this bike.

Ok. So this bike has been up for sale half of summer and still up. It is very clean but to me price is a little high. I love the color.

Also what's the big difference between the 700 and 750. Is it same motor just smaller or something different entirely. Was there any main issues with this year. I would like to not repeat my vf500 saga with another one. Hope is not lost for the 500 I just want another bike. Maybe get the ol lady on the 500.

Wow. That's one clean looking bike!!! I don't think the price is too bad to be honest if it shows as well as it does in the photos.

No major difference betwen the 700 and 750 ... the Japanese bike makers had to drop their displacement slightly to avoid major tariffs that the government had placed on them thanks to HD's whining.

 

Did these have cam issues or anything else.

Looks super clean in pictures. I'd like to see it in person. Maybe he would work a little more on price sense it's sat online for so long. I gotta get a little more money together before I make the hour plus drive to where he is located.

Any large performance differences with the 700/750

Nope. They were corrected when they moved to gear driven cams starting with the VF1000R, the first of the gear driven cam engines, if memory serves correctly.

Should be very little difference in performance with 50cc. Though if you're looking for a 'performance' bike, this is not the bike you want.

 

I'm not taking it to tracks but more get up than the 500 top end would be nice. Thanks for the help. I hope to check this thing out soon.

Hahaha. WAAAAY more than a 500 of similar type of bike.

 

A lot of people bust my balls but I actually really love my 500. Probably one of the funnest bikes I've ever rode. Only downfall in my opinion is long highway rides at 80mph or so. It doesent like it that much. More so in the hills. I'm 240lbs besides.

Looks like a nice find, not too far from you. I would meet with seller, sounds like he is interested in finding someone to keep this classic in good shape. If it is as good shape as it looks, don't think you would lose anything long term on it.

The old V-4's pull like trucks, my 83 will pull smoothly from 1000 rpm to 10,000 rpm. Don't think you would miss the 50cc difference unless you rode someone else's 750, even then small difference. We buy these bikes on emotion and appeal, not on ultimate technical specs.

 

I see a problem on the right side of the seat, might be a bargaining chip.
Have always liked this generation. If the paint is in good shape, the photos can't do the pearl white justice, it will wow you in person.

I have a 1983 VF750S (Sabre) with the shaft drive. There were issues with cam lubrication in those days. That bike just sits, since I couldn't start it a couple of years ago. Bummer, I should sell it.

Anyway, as Jeff says, the 700 was as manufacturing response to tariffs instituted due to whining by H-D over imports of big bikes. The difference in performance is small compared to the 750 for anything other than flat out. It will haul you much more easily than the 500.

 

My other reason for going 700/750 is for touring bags. There is almost nothing for 500. I see much more for these.

I rode a 94ish 750 w single pipe cut down and fell in love. That's what sparked my intros in the v4 lineup. Also furthering my need to ride every model of vintage Honda.

Compared to the VF500 the VFR occupies a much higher level of reliability. It was hugely over engineered as Honda couldn't afford another camshaft eating money pit. Much more go too.

 

That's a sweet one and not out of line price wise, if it runs like it looks, other than normal bike stuff there's really not much wrong with this version. I'd say grab it before someone else does.

 

I see the tape on the seat, but the paint looks good. Not bad for a 30 year old bike. The 700/750's were a tank compared to the 500. I remember my son had a high school friend who have a 500, cute little bike, but too small for me (also 230lbs). Good luck, keep us posted.

I would buy that at $2500 no prob. Solder in Reg/Rect and ride it another 100K miles.

 

Looks very clean--- pull the trigger--- wonder if he's the original owner.

That depends on how you look at it. The tariff gave Harley the breathing room it needed to pull its head out and actually figure out how to make bikes that could compete with the Japanese. Considering Harley has over 50% of the over 750 market in the US I guess you could say it worked.

 

Only bit to these now is the 16" front tire. Not many choices today, still wouldn't let that stop me from getting one. Again. "if"
