My 5th gen had 73k miles on it. I REALLY doubt this was done once by the previous owners. Definitely not by me in the past 7,000 miles.

I thought so too, but if you fill to about 1" below the top, let it soak in for a bit and then work fast it's just fine. I am now able to do it without even removing any fairing fasteners!

This thread by sow really? Long term engine life from someone that puts a total of 1,000 miles a year on his bike--/ quoted by himself---- what's the point?
    LMAO as usual

So not to be a Grinch I always use OEM oil filters and fill it half way before installing with just a little spillage, no big deal with a rag ta catch.

    I've always done this.
You do lose a few mls but the filter is mostly full and the paper pre soaked.

I think maybe SQMan (Jerry) means the filter packing should be wetted, not to dump a shitload of oil into the housing and see how fast ya can slam the new filter in place.

No need do this with the Scott's or the other stainless steel filters..Or ya can do it and have oil all over the deck.

I defer to your knowledge. I haven't seen an OEM filter for years.

Are your fairing panels held on with Velcro?

You're just biased and slamming K&N for some reason, AM:. They do, do a very good job of making sure your rear tire is lubed well......:tickled_pink:

I was about come unglued....then read on.. LOL

K7N are good at providing training grounds for learning o ride on oil soaked roads in the rain. Great corporate citizens giving to the public free of charge and expecting nothing in return.

Looks like plug and no play was the deal on those K&Ns.

Check out K & P Engineering... I use them on all of my bikes... No start up starvation. Like then so much...they talked me into becoming a dealer.

That is truly both annoying and impressing. I nearly popped a vein when I was re-installing the filter :) (not to mention the removal since I missed that the tool I had for filter removal was a 3/8" and the spanners I had was 1/2" and 1/4"....)

Yep, I always prefill my oil filters & also lube the oring before putting it on hand tight..
If you fill the filter as the absolute 1st task, by the time you have removed the fairing (if required) the oil will have soaked into the filter & you will not lose a drop.
I also wrap foil over my exhaust whilst draining to avoid any oil cleanup.

The foil can be re-used too. In a post a couple of years ago, SOW pointed oot that the used foil could be used to line crash helmets to prevent having your brains sucked by invisible aliens. ;)
