It's strictly a case of what the market will bare. Not so much a supporter of this, but if you have the goods, they're as straight as claimed, then add in these arn't all that common. I say best of luck. Have you seen what a clean CBX goes for?

I figure anyone can ask anything they want for what they own. I also think it's good sport, when you find these types of ads to wonder what this person was thinking. I used to drool over bikes and was envious of people that could afford to have such wonderful bikes but not anymore. If I can't ride it, I don't want it. Bikes that are too perfect not for me.

That said there is always a market for everything. There may be that one guy looking for your bike. You may have to wait a lot longer to get a sale.

I am with Big Jim on this one. If it's to nice to ride, then it is only good as a trailer queen. Unless it is just one of a large collection, then sure have it hauled and ride one of your other bikes to the show. Bit other than that pictures are for looking at and bikes are for riding.

Not too bad a price when you consider new HRC headers for a 750 of the same vintage come in at $14-15 thousand per piece.

Try to find that link later.

When I get too old to ride, I'll buy a nice restored classic and haul it to shows. Then I can sit and talk about glory days while people look at my neat bike.

That bike may end up in a collection that could be shown or a museum.. Sure, for most of us semi-regular dudes popping for that bike for 7K ain't gonna happen. Does this make dudes like Jay Leno wrong? He sure gots the pesos and 7K ain't gonna put a dent in his bank account. Leno is being used as an example. I don't know him.

Gotta love the homespun philosophy from one bike dudes too who have little or no concept of what is out there in the world of motorcycles.

My old racing buddy Jerry used to say that the biggest jerks he ever knew had the nicest classic bikes. He figured that they used them as bate to attract people who would other wise not talk to them due to their lack of personal skills. This is all the more ironic given the fact that Jerry had a collection of some really nice and very expensive classic bikes. In fact I used to help him put on a classic bike auction held at South Fork Ranch (of the TV show Dallas.) I learned from that experience that you can own any bike you want, you just have to have the money. It's that easy.

It reminds me of what has happened to the muscle car market. Somebody with a ton of money decides to collect something and brings in more buyers in a monkey see, monkey do scenario.

The cars are now priced out of reach for the average working man and the restorables too. It might be happening with bikes too. Ever watch "American Pickers"?

I've also seen examples of various Yamaha RD's go for big $.
Used parts for older bikes have gone way up just the past 5 years.

I think the market forces are at work rectifying the problem. Many of the collectors you are talking about are aging out of the market. As they do and their collections come up for sale they have to find buyers. Many cars and bikes were bought at the height of markets fueled by something else (easy mortgage money, Internet Boom or one time inheritance.) Also you have to factor in that the people that remember and want those iconic cars and bikes so fondly are aging out of the market as well. Do today's young people want a car or a bike that is maintenance heavy and unreliable compared to modern offerings? Do you want or need an expensive limited use vehicle? I could be wrong but I look for a decline in auctions prices in the future. It happened with the Ford Model T market. Those guy really aged out of the market.

My opinion is, if you're going to ride it, pay what it's worth to you. I don't see the problem with paying too much for something you're not trying to make money on, something you're buying to enjoy. That being said, unless this bike is museum quality, you could probably do a lot better or at least get a bike with known history instead of some one-photo craigslist special. Hell, you could get pretty much any used japanese bike on the market for that much money.

That's the way you advertise to sell when your wife wants you to get rid of all your extra bikes and junk in the garage--it only works for so long, then you get to keep the bikes after she leaves...

    This is the correct interpretation.
It is a domestic compliance ad.

The opposite of this would be the prayer:

Oh Lord, when I die please don't let my wife sell my bikes for what I told her I paid for them!

I hate to break it to you guys, but $8,000 is chump change to a lot of people, and not just millionaires. Any white-collar motorcycle enthusiast with a good job could afford this on a whim, provided he doesn't have kids and isn't in debt. I know programmers in Seattle that make $200,000 a year, have no kids, and live in an apartment for $1,800 a month in the city. Do you have any idea how much disposable income this leaves?

That being said, 8k for a VF1000 is cray cray and it probably won't sell.

I agree, shit, people spend that on swiss watches all the time, and they're guys who make a lot less than $200k and have kids and expenses. However, there's a bit of a difference between financing a used cycle at a dealer for $8000 and dropping $8000 cash on a 30 year old honda.
