If you are looking so far back that you can see out the rear door window you are either extremely flexible, or you are likely wandering in your lane. What you cannot see with a gentle shoulder check, you can see clearly with your mirrors which can be done without pulling on your bars or steering wheel causing a wandering to the left. That is a practice you would be most likely better off getting away from.

Glad you were okay, SOW! Your Himalayans need you!! :)

I usually only use mirrors to keep a watch on traffic and packs of cagers coming up at me from the rear. I'm constantly watching to make sure I maintain a clear pocket around me on the road or at least an escape path.

But whenever merging, turning, switching lanes, or coming up on a merge ramp where others are entering the roadway, I always turn my head, even if mirrors show exactly what I see when turning my head.

There are too many sneaky cagers and I don't trust that my eyes show me everything in the mirrors.

It's saved my butt so many times. But I can understand what you are saying about others just being too fast...you can't see them coming at times, but a head turn can at least give you a chance to react instead of trusting that mirrors show it's clear.

Yeah you shoulder check without fail all the time AM.

You also ride in excellent formation in a group. You always maintain the right position in the lane based on the person in front of you.

I noticed that when we were riding together. You have excellent riding habits compared to anyone I've ever ridden with.

I do try to live so I can ride another day.

I think most riders have had close calls like SOW.

Even the best riding habits fail at times. You know that. I found that out when I almost got hit by an RV. All you can do is try.

Lolz. I may know a thing or two about getting smoked by a larger vehicle.

I'll ride with you any day any where.

It isn't really this difficult to operate a motor vehicle.

Drivers are getting worse, and VINDICTIVE without regard for human life - no matter if you're in a cage or a motorcycle. People have become desensitized and selfish.

I agree with you. The catch is, it takes at least a 45 IQ level to operate a cage within the law and safely (within the law and safely are two different things).

We're out there with people that are intellectually empty, as in, nobody home.

Several times this year I've checked the mirrors but failed to head check when passing. Your concentration is focused on the sometimes limited space ahead. You just assume no one but another bike is going to pass before you do. That may not be the case someday.

Sounds like a baaaaad idea. I did this once and almost changed lanes into the side of a mini van at 75 mph. I always look now.

this is why the shoulder check is called a life saver. thankfully u didnt have to find out the hard way. Its easy to get complacent when u get to comfortable. never assume anything when others are involved.

What might be needed are a set of Harley Mirrors. These are full length and 4' wide. They are not only great for rear view use but superb for self admiration.

Yesterday on a mildly twisting road I noticed in mirrors a car come up behind me, I'm riding at the 100 km/h speed limit. A second or so later I approached a bend in the road, still travelling at 100 km/h, when I'm right at the apex of the corner the car was suddenly right at my side. It passed by me overtaking while still mostly in the same lane. The car was so close beside me the side mirror on the car could almost have clipped my mirror. You look and try to keep your eyes on what they're doing, look back at the approaching road and crazy situations spring upon you. Ffff...
    What do you do?

I have often considered carrying a few bolts along with me but then got to thinking, what then. Does asshole begin to run at me. Does asshole loose it and take out some innocent? So I dismiss that idea. AS much as I would love to put a few chips in his windshield, the potential for much worse is always there.

Absolutely true for people with an IQ above 100. Unfortunately, there are too many people driving with apparently, no IQ. Driver's license tests need to be real. No passy, no drivey.
