For all you guys who have looked into repairing a VF engine after valve train failure, I'm curious how many would spend money if they could get the parts.
I am rebuilding a VF500F and looking at valve and spring replacement, as well as, crank bearings if they are showing wear. Some NOS parts can be found but
I would like to find parts to address the valve failures. I plan to go with the hardfacing solution to address the cam/rocker problem.
I know that others have looked into valves from aftermarket suppliers but I have yet to find someone who has actually gone through with the research and had the parts manufactured.

Right now my cams are in decent shape (latest factory cams, latest banjo bolt (modded), updated factory lines/spray bar. I also have a spare set of most recent factory version (extra oiler holes in cam ends solid) cams with mild pitting to use as a core when getting new cams (Looking at DD stage1 or stage2) or to be hard-pressed and ground to similar specs.

My biggest concerns ( other than gathering that last few pieces for a oil filter adapter style top end oil mod) is getting master link style timing chains and new tensioner as I get chain noise below 3K particularly when cold and/or going downhill in gear.

Right now Dave Dodge does offer many valvetrain parts , including various cam grinds, adjustable gears, springs, retainers, hard welded rockers maybe more.

Here is a list of his vf750 parts/ upgrades he has available.
You could call or email and get the most up to date info.

I would suggest just buying a used engine if you can find one.

Less expensive and less work. Do a rockwell test on the cams and rockers in the new (used) engine before installing it.

Not real familiar with Rockwell hardness and testing.
I am guessing your local machinist could do this.
What numbers as famous hardness should I see in a good set of factory cams? Rockers?

Will read up on testing procedure and such later.

Don't really know much about the 500's but the 2ND gen gear driven cam 750 motors are supposed to be nearly a drop in fit (if moving a complete 2G 750 including intake exhaust etc.) Same foe a vf1000f motor they both make about the same peak power with the 750 motor being more reliable...
I wonder what kind of lift / duration the high strung 500 cams have versus the 750. Or if they are even the same length?
