Those plastic clips are a real pain

Took the fairings off the bike today. Who designed those black plastic pin clips? Geez they are impossible to get out.

Not to mention many of them are in impossible locations.

I think I will replace them all with the rubber expanding screw type on my CBR's.

These to OEM Honda Clips are like comparing hookers to wives.

 

The clips are super easy ... you have to push the center all the way in, then you can pull them out.

I broke a few myself until I figured it out. Now easy peasy.

 

Yah, true ... if they come pre-mangled, then they would be a PITA.

 

Funny, just got these today, replaced worn and broken clips while doin oil change and cleaning of my K&N air filter.
Would like a sit done with the brainiac that came up with this wonderful idea.

You have to be able to get behind them to push the center up...many you can't do that.

Not saying "pry" on it. The ones I have on the bench the center only moves from the back side...pushing on the head does nothing.

I'm just going to replace them with the CBR rubber type. These have threads bonded in the rubber that expands when you tighten the screw.

I have a bunch of these.

 

What are those? Never seen those type before ...

 

BTW ... might be in MSP this weekend with the bike. Haven't decided myvplans yet and watching the weather.

When they are in place the front is flush, and you push the center in, that loosens the fit and they pull right out. Once the center is pushed in you have to push it out from the rear. I broke a couple at first, but most of the ones on my '99 are original. Like the man says: "Easy peasy".

After installing, you push the center back down to flush to lock it.

Yes they can become brittle and break, but when you know how they work, they function perfectly fine.

 

Jeff. Those are well nuts. You have several of those on your bike now. Where you have faring bolts, most of them screw into these well nuts. They look like what was posted above when new. But once you have installed them and run the faring bolt into them, the rubber sleeve collapses from the imbedded nut and causes the sleeve to compress against the fairing and keeping it in place.

Next time you have your faring off, look at where the fairing bolts go into except for the two near the lower sided that screw into brackets.

BTW, you can pay a fortune buying OEM well nuts or you can get the same ones from Home Depot for a fraction of the cost. They do wear out and begin to spin while you try to get the bolt out and become a pain in the ass to get out until you replace them.

 

The ones you want are the M6. They do fit snug at first but I swear by these.

 

Not sure why everyone seems to have a problem with these? Push in the center and pop them out. The big problem I have with these OEM units is they cost so damn much and are not commonly found outside of OEM suppliers.

Those little rubber expanding screw type things are called well nuts. Rather than using these look at DZus fasteners as these are 1/4 turn and are used on a lot of race bikes for quick fairing removal.
