Shouldn't "The Drill" Be a Sticky?

I was thinking after reading over all the charging system problems with these bikes that "The Drill" should be made into a Sticky.

There is a lot of good information in a number of threads that are a bit hard to find. It would be nice to be able to find it all in one place.

Also when reading "The Drill" there are some things I thought of that could be added to the testing.

When reading resistance on the coils, there are two ways they can fail. The wires in the coil can melt or break.

If there is a reading outside of spec you can test to determine why. A short (wires melted) will usually read low. If for instance you get .6 OHMS, if it's shorted internally, reverse the leads on the VOM and you should read .4 OHMS if the total is supposed to be 1.0 OHMS. What your reading is the resistance to the short in each direction. This doesn't always work, especially if the coil has shorted to ground but it is a way to determine failure. It also is a way to test a coil that is reading high. If the coil reads say 1.5 OHMS, if it is good it should read the same when the leads are switched. One problem with this when reading a higher resistance is that the higher reading could be caused by an early breakdown of the insulation (just prior to melt through). Normally coils are wound under controls during manufacture and tested to be in spec prior to assembly. So if the resistance is high it usually means something is wrong.

A wire break in a coil is less likely and is caused by fatigue or wires flexing. I would suspect this would be rare in this application, but the reading would be infinite, basically the same as when the VOM leads are in air (not connected to anything). The coil would not show a short to ground.

Someone may have posted this before and if so I'm sorry to be redundant but I couldn't find it.

That was kind of a long explanation for a very simple addition to the testing, but it might help to verify a failure.

Sticky isn't enough. It needs to be included in the registration process before a new user can create an account. There needs to be a check box that says "I have read The Drill, and understand how to troubleshoot and identify charging problems related to the R/R and stator"

Not only should it be a sticky, Honda or the Honda dealerships should be mandated to inform any new customer buying a new or used Honda that it might fail on some dark and stormy night in the middle of God knows where or Canada.

We know that shit ain't gonna happen but it's a nice thought.

With a K&N oil filter that would be an anti-sticky.

This and a few other threads should be stickied ... like the K&N disaster threads. Don't know why they don't get stickied though??

Are you guys talking about the post from mello dude years ago that appears in the middle of a thread? I don't see any thread specifically called the drill, but then again I used our default VB search.

I have that thread specifically book marked. But then that does not help out those who may be searching for it. If I spot someone looking, I can easily send them the link though.
