I mounted VTR1000 pipes on my VFR (pics & video)

    Custom Pipes on my 86 VFR (pics & video)

    Well I decided my Cobras were too loud and I was not a huge fan of the sound so I spent some time researching what else I could mount on my VFR. I read VTR Superhawk Cans would work with small modification. Well they did with big modification I had to cut the necks on the cans way back. and modify the angle a bit. They were close but not spot on. So I made them fit.
    I am not a professional welder I have a cheap Lincoln flux welder I know they are messy get off my case
    I plan on sanding the JB weld and painting it later but I am going to make sure it is durable first.

    2 VTR 1000 cans left and right $75 shipped on ebay
    2 packages of JB weld $8
    Acetone (to clean before paint and JB weld) $5
    2 1.75 OD to 1.75 ID adapters $6
    TOTAL cost $94 for parts

    I started using the angle grinder with cut off wheel to shorten the necks on the stock VTR pipes. Then on the adapter I cut the smaller end with 4 slits and expanded it to fit over the stock pipes. Then I cut the other end short and made one slit. Finally I cut 85-90% of the way through to make the correct angle.

    I lined it up using the mounting tab and tack welded it into place.

    Next after making sure it was all lined up about a dozen times I closed the gap. This was the first pipe it was much uglier than the second but what ever.

    After closing the gap and making sure it was very sturdy I covered it in JB weld to seal any pin hole leaks. I plan on sanding the JB weld and painting it later but I am going to make sure it is durable first.

    Finally the center stand was a very tight fit but a few smacks with an oxy torch and a hammer should fix that.

    All together I think they are a good fit and look as good as the cobras. But I cannot decide if I lost any power. The VTR1000 has a similar output to the VFR so it should be all good.

    Also there is ZERO popping on deceleration or acceleration. So that makes me very happy.

    Those look good on there. Can only tell so much from the videos but just from what I can hear it almost burbles like a V8 at idle, though it becomes a sportbike again when you rev it up. The flybys sounds about like the Yoshi on my 700F2, though with a bit more two-stoke-ish buzz.

    I like it, man. Good job. Kudos for doing it yourself even if it the welds were ugly ;)

    Looks good but I wanted to keep it dual exhaust

    And for less than $100 and only a dew hours of labor why not.

    As someone who's had a couple of superhawks (GREAT bike BTW), I can tell you that the stock pipes sound really good with a bafflectomy on the vtwin.

    You can start by drilling holes in between the two rings till you find the db level you like. If you want more than that, you can pull the inner pipe out. I can post a how-to link if you want.

    the bike looks and sounds great. would you be willing to part with the cobras for a price? im in dire need of an exhaust on my 86' 750. The pipes are rashed beyond belief (dropped twice before i bought it) and its far to quiet for my liking. any pics of the old pipes would be great, too.

    There is a dent where the center stand sits on this side but when the stand is up it i not noticeable

    Nothing like saving a few bucks and going with the gutting of the cans. I like fotomoto's word "baffelecomy" of the cans. I do agree with mysterymachine, I too like loud pipes. That's why I gutted my cans and enjoy it every time I drive off. Anyone who's interested, here's a clip.
