You first - lol. Actually I've been down pretty low with the blinking lower bar going. However, you guys will probably all laugh at me but I've never even attempted to top off my tank - Ihaven't gone on a long road trip and plus I'm paranoid of having fuel spill over on my tank's paint. So even when I thought it was close to bone dry I still only put about 4 gallons in.

I hate to use the words Ford Taurus in the same decade as VFR but back when I managed our fleet of those whimpy little fuckers, the owners manual even said that if you used a higher grade of fuel, Ford may refuse to honour the warranty. I used to be a constant user of premium fuels in my cars until I read up a little more on gasoline many years back. Even back before the fuel was leaded, I can't say Premium gave better performance or mileage that regular leaded. I would not bet money that it did not either. I just didn't see the difference other than in the wallet.

I have spilled fuel often on the tank and the paint does not seem to have suffered any from that. BUT! If you are not going to ride a mile or two before you shut down the bike, you shouldn't top it up anyways. The gasoline could expand enough to force out the filler cap and create a fire or explosive hazard. I fill mine to as close as I can get to the top when the bike is on its side-stand. Meaning, I don[t sit there and dry to squeeze out two more ounces. Waste of my time. If I am traveling o a lonely stretch where distance between fill-ups might be really far, I will put the bike on the centre stand and top her up.

Trust me, the gas won't do diddly squat to your paint. To it off, it keeps moisture out your gas tank. Modern paint is pretty impervious to gasoline. The worst that will happen if it may strip a little wax off of it. You do wax your bike, right?

A bit off the original topic Bet Randy can answer this one. Does the 6th gen tank have what looks like bar of sorts just off the side in the filler neck? I've notice it and wondered what it's for? with that , that's what I use for a fill mark. figure it has something to do with venting or return for the FI. The 4th gen doesn't have this feature when using that mark and get to where the bar starts blinking, I will add 4.6 just about every time.

I will look in the morning.

I do know that there is some sort of hole in the collar around the filler hole. I also know that there is an over flow tube in there somewhere. Whether these two are associated or not I do not know. I can know you may be surprised I don't know something. But knowing not to comment on things you know nothing about leads people to know you are full of shit...you know?

For as long as Honda has been stuffing the V4 engines into their bikes, the fuel recommendations staying the same for the whole bunch is kinda fuzzy thinking.

"Most" tanks on VFRs are clearcoated, unlike the paint on the rest of the bike. Those guys who figured out that once in awhile some gas may spill on the tank are pretty sharp IMO..

These "tough" automotive paints have been out for years. Even without that extra layer of clear on a tank that has been repainted a spill of any kind of gas is not going to cause much more than messing some with a natural wax. "Many" tanks have both venting capability to keep the ambient pressure equalized and overflow tubes.

    I don't know aboot Harleys..
