I'm fairly new here, actually this is my first post. Any input will help thanks!
So about two months ago I did my first oil change on my 2003 VFR. During the change I saw how terribly placed the filter was. Hoses and pipes make it nearly impossible to get a good grip....anyway I got it off and I tightened the new filter on what I thought was tight. But the other day I saw some white smoke coming up from the handle bars and I chopped it up too being near some construction. The next day I was on a ride with a friend and he said there is white smoke coming from my bike so I went home took off the fairings to get a good look at where the smoke could be coming from and I saw the oil filter was leaking oil. So I wiped everything down tightened it more which was difficult. Kept the fairings off rode around for and an hour and saw more oil. Which leads me to believe it's not how tight the filter is but something is wrong with it. I've read some posts about KN 204 oil filter about it not fitting properly. Had anyone else had this issue recently? What did you do to remedy? I'm assuming I need to do another oil change with a new filter. What filter works best?

    Thanks in advance

    I know I wrote a lot lol

    Rule #1 ... don't use K&N

Those filters are notoriously bad. Replace it with something else and never look back.

The filter is pretty easy to get on and off even with the puoes and hoses IF the gasket was coated with oil before installing and it was tightened only to hand tight (and not super hand tight either)

Sorry to hear the troubles but not at all surprised that it's another K&N

I've used kn filters on all of my cars and I guess I never noticed any leaking. What filters do you think work best?

    Rule #2 ... See rule #1.

There's been many threads posted here about the KN-204 & why not to use it. Some have experienced leakage from the nut on the end. Others (myself included) have had leakage from a torn seal. Basically the seal on the filter doesn't completely match up to the sealing surface on the engine. When tightened the seal will deform & get pinched on the inner sealing surface of the engine. Tearing the seal. Bottom line don't use the KN 204 on your VFR.

Now you probably don't have to do another oil change. You can just change the filter & top off the oil level. Thats your call.

After my experience with KN I switched back to the OEM filter.

To be fair to KN I never had an issue with their oil filters on my Suzuki. I've also gone back to the OEM filter on that bike as well. Why risk it?

I had 2 K&N oil filters fail on my 6th gen. After that, I went to Hi-Flo (same part number) with no problems. Also, as stated, you can't go wrong with Honda filters.

Purolator Pure One PL-14612 (standard size)
Purolator Pure One PL-14610 (extended size)

Cheaper, easier to purchase, higher particle capacity and smaller particulate filtering than all the other filters mentioned in this thread.

P.S. if you ditch the evap canister, you will make oil changes much easier for yourself.

P.P.S Rule #1 and Rule #2, K&N oil filters are trash and should have been banned years ago. Partly due to user error, over torquing at the end nut, partly due to poor construction.

OML yet another one, sheesh! what is it about folks grabbing a KN in the first place? are they in stock on the self at Wally world? ? I mean first off thoughts if i was a newbie would go OEM. it's not like KN is in your face right off the bat when looking for a filter, Just Crazy. Yes rule #1 flowed by Rule #2 I SMH at this one. Yes WIX here, or OEM....

You simply cannot fail with OEM. The bike is engineered for these. I just find them a little pricey so I have gone to Bosch 3323. They are a bit bigger but they do fit with gentle persuasion. I do believe they are as good if not higher quality as the OEM. I buy them in quantity because I use the same filter on my son's car, my wife's car and my bike. Usually readily available at Wally World. These and Motul T6 are about the only thing I buy from Wally World.

SERIOUSLY THOUGH> DUMP THE K&N FILTER. For the cost of 3 1/2 quarts of oil, I would just do the complete oil change at the same time. That certainly won't hurt. I suspect it will be a lot less messy too.

I think Badbilly is a Wally World greeter.

Consider that some of the mods suggested come from sources that are well meaning but do not have to conform to California emission standards and testing.

There are sources for service manuals and an overall mechanics manual for your bike online.

The K&N oil filters? Not a good idea!

    Cual pelon? ;)
