Before I buy a RC24 I could use some advice about carbs

Hello there. I have the opportunity to buy an 750 RC24 (1988)which has been laid up for a while. It seems in good nick but the original carbs have been pulled apart. A different complete and clean set of carbs will be sold unattached with the bike but apparently needs a different airbox which takes 6 screws instead of the usual 5 (I haven't seen the bike yet just pictures). Does this sound like an RC36 set of carbs and are the two interchangeable? I need to get the different airbox but before I think of doing the deal I need to know whether these carbs will fit or whether I should budget in gettting an original set from somewhere. I have read somewhere that they use different rubbers but will the newer airbox fit under the tank? Should I consider K & N air filter .

Hope that makes sense and thanks for the help in advance.

I doubt the other carbs will work on an '88, so you'll need to reassemble the originals, yeah ? :eagerness:

If the second set of carbs actually fit, why haven't they been installed already ?

Good point. I don't think it's anything sinister, he's a mechanic who's a part time biker with very little time on his hands but I will ask - I just think knew he didn't have the right air box. I'm thinking I will try and get some originals. I wish I could find out for sure. I imagine someone on here will be able to answer me.

So why is just assembling the original carbs not the best idea ???

If someone sent me a box with ALL the parts for those original carbs, i would go through the parts and assemble the whole set for less than $200 USD.

I think it was was just that one of the four was in a right state which is why the guy got hold of a set of new ones and I was just saving myself some time. Seems I will be reassembling then old set new set.jpg bad carb.jpg Ive been sent a picture of the duff carb and another with the old set in bits and the shiny new ones (which seemingly won't fit). Going by the photos, the new set looked more appealing. Seems from what you're saying though that they'll have to go back on ebay.

I would bet a set of carbs from a 86-87 would fit. I'm restoring my 86 and I'm always looking on eBay for parts. I picked up a set of carbs. But there's another set for $49 being listed.

The spacing is the same but the diameter of the spigots is different, so the rubber isolators are different. The 3rd gen (RC36) has the largest venturi of all the carbs. Not sure how to interface the larger venturi port on the carb to the smaller engine port.

The 1st gen carb pulley is in the middle of the front bank, which contributes greatly to the PITA factor most folks suffer in getting those carbs off. For the 2nd and 3rd gens, they moved the pulley to the end of the #2 carb shaft (pressed or swaged on to a round shaft), so it is easier to get cable off/on, as long as you loosen the adjuster and jam nuts first. For the 4th gen the pulley got moved to the end of the #1 carb, but it is simply bolted on a threaded portion of the shaft that has two flats machined across that lock the pulley orientation.

Thanks for all the info. My bike is an 88 so I'll wait until I see it properly to decide what to do.

Find someone with an ultrasonic cleaner. You'll need to disassemble the guts from the carbs first.

The other set of carbs is from the '94-'97 4th gen series, and i'd imagine you could buy a carb set to fit your bike with the money from selling those.
