As I have posted before, it's not whether CS works or not, only that it is second nature, instinctive, so that your mind doesn't take over.

Countersteering must kinda work. Grey is still around after seven years.

Good reflexes can be important. One time I heard aboot this guy who chewed a whole box of Exlax thinking it was regular gum.

So I go to youtube and this pops up in the "Recommended for you." Why not, so I click on to watch. Well, no spoilers here so watch. Shows a pretty good illustration of counter-steering.

If memory serves me right, this was up on GRR here is Azuza California. The road is very narrow and no center line. Many a rider has been caught off guard up there!

I hope the rider got through it... Narrow road, a bigass truck + the closing speed is unknown all adding to the collision. Could be that some of that weaving could have been from locking up the rear wheel.

Wow! Graphic example. Countersteering is well explained. Many new riders have no idea countersteering exists even though they are actually doing it to get around corners. They just think they are leaning (or riding Buells :) ). Once it is explained to them the light goes ON and suddenly riding becomes so much easier and more fun.

Rightly or wrongly, I think of countersteering in terms of "PUSH right to go right, PUSH left to go left" meaning push the right bar or left bar.

Countersteering is the single most important word to spread to all riders. It IS a lifesaver.

    Cheers,
    Glenn

Honestly I think the best thing to do is look away from the Semi-truck and your brain will do the rest. It already knows how to countersteer, you just have to let it. Easier said than done I know, but the point of teaching someone to countersteer is to give them an intentional act (push the bar) when their other intentions (turn the bike) have failed. You're giving them something to think about when they already have too much to think about. What you ought to be doing is teaching them the instinct so their body will act without intention. The other day I tried to squeak through a left turn on a yellow, and the guy coming through the other way didnt see me and also tried to go straight through. Thanks to the MSF course, my brain knew to just look left, (away from the oncoming car,) give it a squirt and I made it right through before he could have hit me.

It could be a 50 year old thread. Countersteering is THAT important.

Actually, now I consider it to a current thread considering the activity of the past couple of days.

Countersteering, practice it conciously ALL the time and you will someday realize you are always doing it sub-conciously - naturally, without a thought.

Did you ever say what you practice that you actually used in that situation Jeff? It certainly seemed to work.

It was mostly automatic reaction from my MX days.

I always visualize every time I get on a bike what I'd do in certain situations, but there's no real way to be truly prepared for something like that.

All you can do is breathe, keep calm, and think ...

True but the post that re-opened the thread was about cones, not counter steering. It now has become more focused about counter steering so more better then I guess.

Muscle memory has saved me a few times as well! A few weeks ago as I'm lane sharing and the truck to my left for whatever reason started to drift to his right, his big ass truck mirror was right in front of me, just about to touch my mirror and me next! Without even thinking, I quickly swerved and missed getting tagged.

A good part of riding is muscle memory / automatic reflexes.

I've kicked peoples passenger doors when they start swerving at me. lolz
