Hi Gang

I don't come on here that often, mostly because my 5th Gen. is reliable and I rarely have anything to ask or offer.

However, after 16 years with my trusted friend I am considering something else now. I'm getting on in life and if I don't buy something with a bit of oomph now, then I never will. Apparently some people call this a mid-life crisis.

Thing is, I absolutely love my VFR. It's in near immaculate condition and generally keeps up with the group I knock about with on much newer and more powerful bikes. It wants for nothing except perhaps a service to the forks.

But, I've seen an old ZX-9R for sale and it's double-cheap. Only 9000 miles on it, looks great in blue and I want it. It'll have another 40 odd more horses than my bike and this I am hoping will bring my grin back.

Anyone else ever felt like chopping theirs in for a more beastly bike? Or maybe someone has some info/advice on the Ninja C2 please?

I think youll find the zx-9r will be gutless at low rpms in comparison to your VFR. I will probably never buy something that isn't made by honda, but that's just me. Not sure what youre looking to spend, but there's no shortage of crazy-fast affordable liter bikes out there, and theres a reason us guys are still riding VFRs.

You'll kill yourself---don't doooooo it.
Why get rid of that beautiful bike, it's as fast as you'll ever need---think you might want to rethink this a bit.
Think you just may regret the change --- getting up in age? What's the number? JMO of course. ---

There's only one bike to look at. The CBR1100XX super BlackBird. Here's an excerpt from a Honda facts write up:
Mr Yamanaka
He was Honda’s project leader for the BlackBird . He was also the project leader for the VFR750. The BlackBird project started in December of 1993 and the first BlackBird test bikes were being ridden in August 1994! His goals were to combine the power of a 1000cc-plus road bike with the handling of a middle-weight without building a race replica and to provide comfort. And you know what?..He did a damn good job of it., don't you think
You want power, speed, stability at all speeds, comfort, handling and reliablity check out a BB. Cross winds don't effect the bike unless they are over 25mph, running 120/130mph is the same feel as running 60/70 down the highway and still be flickable. Can be tame around town and a friggin rocket once the throttle is opened wide. The engine internals have been lightened and the motor spins up so fast you'd think is was a turbine. It just keeps pulling hard all the way to 11000rpm. The fit, finish and reliability is all top Honda craftsmanship.

If you like long distant rides this thing is a mile muncher in comfort. There is no rpm or mph where this thing doen't have the power to do what you want now without any buzz, tingle or vibration it's so smooth. You can pick up a good one for $4,000 to $5,000. If you really like the VFR that much then take a ride on a BB you'll feel at home but with a far bigger grin!

That's what I did and I'll never look back cause the grin never comes off once I'm on it!

You little shit you are. talk about stirring the pot. Went to look at leather suits at the Ducati dealership last Saturday. The thinking if they had one that fit most where on a big year end clearance. just maybe that would make for a great BD present to myself , But no, it got more interesting, I spied a used 013, got the dude to start it up and around the block, Oh my Lord. Way more grunt over the CBR down low. I could get use to this real quick. SMH. fate is tempting me.

I'd buy another bike. But keep your VFR. I guarentee in a couple of years from now, you're going to wish you had it back, if you sell it.

I've never heard of any big Kawie being gutless at any speed, but OK.

I have a 929. It's very fast. But that's all it's really good for.

If the garage space/finances/significant other permit it, buy another bike! The 5th gen is special and for me a keeper, but not the fastest machine out there. I have been unable to help myself and have acquired a VTR1000 and an ST1100 to keep the VFR company. The VTR is raucous fun at semi-sensible speeds, the ST is the go-to bike for a day long meandering ride. Both were just SO cheap that I couldn't resist adopting them. Having said that, I am keeping my eye out for a CBR929 or better still a 954, which would be a worthwhile addition to the fleet.

I actually traded my 2002 ZX9R F1P for my first 2004 V-TEC as I found the ZX9 just too uncomfortable after a couple of hours in the saddle

IMG_0233.jpg

BUT the extra horsepower was intoxicating and would wheelie on demand easily in first gear on throttle alone and was a liability with a pillion as they sit right over the rear axle acting like a rear ballast making third gear wheelies over bumps under acceleration all too easy

The other half hated it as she sat higher than me and took the full wind blast and felt too perched with the higher rear foot peg to seat relationship

Do it. Didn't buy my first gsxr1000 until I was 52. I never regretted it. The zx9 is a good handling sport bike, but more than that, it is comfortable .

Some great opinions/advice there, thanks. I think I will buy the Ninja and see how I get on with before selling the VFR.

The bike I have my eye on is only €2200 with just 9300 miles on the clock. It's a cheap bike and I could afford to keep both but with 4 cars scattered around the place, I think I may need to rent another garage!

It happens, you can't turn it off. Even with a stupid number of mods and cash spent, didn't even blink an eye when I sold mine on and never missed it.

Never missed it?! I have missed every bike I have ever owned, especially heavily modded ones.

No. I've had and ridden much more beastly bikes and I could keep up with them on my VFR's. It isn't the bike, it's the rider. On a track, it's a different story, sometimes. You can only do so much safely on a public road IMHO.
