So weird thing happened leaving work at 9 last night. Went threw my routine like I do every day, had the music playing, always keep in gear and never use the kill switch, turned the key on and reached down to the shifter to click it into neutral--- green light came on, pushed the start button and nothing, now this is with my bike on the kickstand---so I sat on the bike put it back in first then neutral, lifted the stand up and it started right up---- never have had this happen before, thinkin maybe I got a false neutral or the stand switch is the culprit.
Any suggestions would be appreciated--- I'll go out now and see if she starts, always have it in neutral in the garage.
Thanks in advance for any help

Did you try and repeat the problem right away?

Pretty sure that if neutral light was on, then side stand switch shouldn't be the issue. If in neutral, should start regardless if side stand switch is open or closed. It's only two wires, open or closed circuit.

Unless it was kind of in between and not really in neutral? That is why I asked if he could duplicate the problem. But it does sound like the switch.

Probably like you said, not all the way in neutral. Keep an eye on it.

i'm not buying a lot of stock in the theory about not being all the way in neutral. There's only one neutral switch and if the dash indicator light says it's in neutral, then the bike thinks it's in neutral.

So it's one circuit for both? Then possibly corrosion on the wire that kills the motor?

Gota love gremlins. or is that Murphys law? either one can get you when you least expect it. Try putting it in gear and pull in the clutch to start it.

Is the switch easily unplugged and cleaned? Never really got down there and checked it out.

It could mean that that point in time inherently contains some sort of cosmic significance. Almost as if it were the temporal junction point for the entire space-time continuum.

That's likely the problem but didn't want to post it up, it's so elementary. I should be more helpful next time.

Like RVFR said, also check the switch at the clutch.

Clutch switch wouldn't matter if it was indicating neutral.

I'm sure it goes without saying; make sure next time that you only introduce one variable into the equation. Assuming you observed and reported the symptoms accurately, I'm guessing it was all coincidence and the problem is most likely the starter button or starter relay. Just my guess.

When I first got my bike, I had adjustable shorty levers on the clutch side and one day the bike wouldn't start while the bike was in gear and the lever pulled. It ended up being the clutch switch was out of it's actuation range if I had the levers adjusted close. I've since replaced the lever with the factory lever. I like the longer lever anyway.
When I was an electronics technician my experience was that it's usually something mechanical before electrical. Following that logic I would closely inspect the kickstand. Was it ALL the way up? Are the springs still good? Is it lubricated and not getting hung up before getting to the fully raised position? Could a rock or debris have caused a temporary problem with the stand going up? Then and only then would I move on to the stand switch.
That's just some thoughts I had, on this day, at this juncture of the time space continueum.

But if the neutral light was actually on as reported, then neither of those should matter.

Thanks guys, always when putting my stand up hit it with my heal to make sure it's all the way up, same routine for 5+ years when leaving work, hasn't done it since--- was going to check the clutch switch last night but had to do a 12ver yesterday. Hopefully it was as tinkerInWstuff suggested
