Chain adjusting is almost an art to get the feel of. That being said, you want to find the tight spot, from that you adjust. One note here, one should also have some one like you sit on the bike to double check. don't be to surprised if you need to make more slack. I find a lot of bikes have their chain to tight!!! Not good.

You can measure slack on top of swing arm where the chain slider is. Lift up on chain, should be 2 inches or so...

On my 4th gen. the chain slack is 0.6 to 1 inch. I run towards the tight end as I find the slacker it is the worse the gear change. My method of adjustment is place bike on main stand. Place metal tape measure on ground running up past chain. In other words a 90 degree angle. I then loosen off bolt on wheel hub. Spin the rear wheel and you will find easily the tight point as you will see the chain rise up and down on the tape measure scale. Tighten or loosen chain at tight point on centre of chain. Tighten bolt. I know there are some people who have more elaborate ways of doing chain adjustment but it is just that, a chain adjustment.

Agreed, chain slack will affect the way you change gears, just right and you won't hear them. Loose is better than too ttight. Vfr set up is a breeze and at least mine don't require tightening. The other non sssw bike, you can get the wheel cockeyed if you dont pay attention to scribe marks or as i do it, the length of adjuster rod left on the back end.

Yea, ain't chain adjusting a no brainier on a VFR, win win ;) Yep as noted, and for the most part a 1" slack mid point on the lower portion of the chain will be darn close. just make sure that's on the tight part of the chain.
