I've got an '02 VFR with about 8,000 miles. It has black rims and I want SILVER ones! (just a personal preference thing.) The bike has always been garaged and has only been ridden in rain once. The wheels have only been removed from the bike once (about three months ago for some new Pirelli Diablo Strada extended mileage Sport Touring tires.) What kind of condition are the rims in? The best way to describe them is: what you'd expect them to look like after 8,000 miles and one tire change.

Not sure what your VFR will look like with black rims? Here you go! I live about 30 miles west of Philadelphia. Thanks!

P.S. Maybe you plan on trading in your Gen. 6 VFR (with SILVER wheels) and know the dealership will give you the same amount of money for your trade-in regardless of whether your rims are black or silver. Hint!!! Hint!!! Hint!!!

Edit: I made a mistake about the mileage on my bike. As of 8/11/07, it's got about 6,200 miles. If anybody wants to see a picture of the odometer, I'll be glad to oblige.

Man I Have a White 06, It is tempting but I got new Metzlers which i want to keep on mine ( don't personally like Pirelli's)
and I don't know if I could live without my bike for as long as it would take to ship them. I seriously am thinking about it. then there is the question of trusting someone I don't know anything about.

Have you considered getting your wheels painted over the winter?

The wheel swap thing is easy enough if both bikes need tires at the same point in time, and are in reasonable proximity to each other. Otherwise it's a major pain in the butt.

Have you thought about stripping them? I did that to my '00 yellow and they look great. Very simple to strip but they end up shiny on matted.

For starters, I was wrong about the mileage on my bike. As of this morning, It's got about 6,200 miles (I can take a picture of the odometer and send it to you.) The tires were installed at the dealership on 6/30/07. I have the receipt that itemizes everything that was done (including balancing.)

About the trust thing, that's completely understandable. You can't be too careful nowadays.

The only thing I can think of would be for us to meet halfway. If you're in New Orleans, we're talking about far southeastern Virginia (close to the Tennessee border.) We could ride there after work Friday, crash at a motel, and then drive to a local dealership first thing Saturday morning. Since a lot of dealerships work on a first come, first served basis on Saturdays, if we're the first ones there, we could be in and out in no time. Once we're done, we each go our own way. I'm just throwing this out there as an idea.

Another thing is if were to swap rims and tires, then we could easily swap the rear wheels ourselves (I'm sure you don't need me to tell you, it's a cinch on the VFR.) Regarding the front wheel, put the bike up on the center stand, and then sit on the passenger part of the seat, thereby lifting the front wheel up to remove it. The problem with this, however, is I have neither the tools or know-how to remove and install the front wheel.

I've thought about powder coating them but, in my opinion, they're never going to look as good or last as long as factory wheels. Besides, because of the high heat involved in powder coating, I'd have to replace the bearings, seals, etc. I'd rather just find somebody willing to swap wheels. Besides, powder coating both wheels could easily run $200+. Now throw in the cost of replacing the bearings, seals, etc., and, well, you get the picture.

Here's a bulletin: If you remove the bearings and seals from the front wheel BEFORE you have it painted or powder coated (2 very distinct processes), you can reinstall the bearings and seals when the wheel is done.

    Get the picture?

Thanks for the reply. I got so tired of waiting for somebody to trade with that I decided to keep mine and customize them a little (I'll be posting pictures of my customized wheels in a few days for everyone to see.)

While I had the wheels off, I gave them a really good cleaning. While cleaning them I noticed there were a few more scratches than I thought (nothing major by any means), but a few more than I originally indicated. Consequently, this may actually work in your favor (I'm just trying to be honest.)

I powdercoat wheels all the time, remove bearings, tire, valve stem and weights, they will media blast with walnut shells and powdercoat for about $125 a rim, lasts a long time.

I don't think I've ever seen carbon wheels for a VFR. If you find some (or somebody willing to make them), they're probably going to be quite expensive.

Since you're going for the carbon look, I suggest black wheels from an RWB as opposed to the black wheels on my '02. The ones on my bike are semi-gloss black whereas the ones on an RWB are more of a flat black (I think I've seen them called gunmetal black.) Regardless, in my opinion, these would look more carbon-like than my semi-gloss black wheels. You can probably pick up a set of RWB wheels from the dealership for $800 or so. Another alternative is to swap wheels with someone with an RWB. The reason you might actually find someone is because some RWB owners want (or have had) their wheels powdercoated white (to make their bike look more like the original RWB Interceptors.) If an RWB owner is going with white wheels, then I doubt they'd care what color wheels they've got because they're going to be stripped anyway (i.e. prior to powder coating.)

Whatever you decide, best of luck to you.
