I've had it 2 weeks and put 1200 trouble free miles on it. It effortlessly holds 80-90 with no struggles.

Has your bike had a lot of recent service? I'm concerned about mine since I just bought it around the same time as you and it seems to be in similar shape. I'm gonna do some hoses and all fluids soon so I guess Ill find out how it'll fare.

Engines when they get that old and don't have regular use - the seals dry out and become brittle and leak.

Caliper rebuilds all around new brake lines, valves checked chain sprockets and stage 1 jets in the last year. He gave me a list of oil changes and other stuff over the last several years

I started it up this morning fired off and no noise ran it for a few seconds no smoke. I'm thinking and hoping just a valve seal. Or head gasket. As long as it's not hard parts.

In a strange turn of events I was offered this for trade for my old 88 xt600 enduro. 83 vf750. Runs and rides. I like the windshield

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Still haven't ordered top end gaskets for the 500. Honda can only get a full engine set or my other choice is Athena. Thoughts on there products. I've had there big bore kits on dirt bikes but never even knew they made street bike stuff

I wouldn't spend a penny until you know exactly what's wrong with it.

Do you know the history on it? Being in Syracuse, you know it was ridden year round! I lived in Penn Yan for 20+ years.

    The 500 or the 750.

The 500 is from new Berlin area (south of Utica 40mi)
The 750 is in Liberty that's down by Middletown

I trusted the guy with the 500. He was a nice guy with a lot of nice stuff in his garage. Everything well taken care of. And heated in winter

Well.... I just got around to working on the bike. I put a 22hr day in and was hoping to pull plugs see a washed clean one and say yup head gasket. Well unfortunately that is not the case.

    [IMG][IMG]

Ive searched for pistons and only used ones for sale. So am I screwed if I have to bore out a cylinder.

That mangled plug is a symptom of a dropped valve. You need to compression check the cylinder it came out of.
I am afraid your engine is probably toast. It's not worth repairing in that condition.

I have pictures of many engines that have failed that way. All model years are affected.

The 500's are know for dropping valves. That's why it's hard to find a used engine for one. The 86 engine is different, better, than the 84/85 engines. It's easier to find a used engine than it is to try and rebuild one, because of parts availability. Look for all the parts you may need before proceeding to rebuild and make sure they are for the year engine you have.

Is there a mod for valves. Or a swap from different model

My biggest issue is now your back to a unknown 30 year old motor.
