Having just got back from a 2 day 1400 Km trip with a friend, him on a 2003 1000 Vstrom I have a question.
I was always able to keep up with him when it seemed like he was hard on the throttle, seemed pretty easy to stay with or even catch him when he seemed to be "going for it". I don't think I have ever been full throttle around him so I don't think he has any idea how quick I am and he really doesn't have the patience not to pin it when he gets the chance.
He is always going on and telling people that the bikes are pretty equal but with more torque his would obviously be the faster and quicker of the 2 bikes. It never really concerned me and I usually just let him ramble on but yesterday he started going on about putting a power commander on his and telling people that I wouldn't be able to keep up with him at all if he wanted to lose me.
Comparing his 2003 Vstrom and my 2002 VFR (stock other than the power commander) in straight speed, in the real world and not on paper, anyone here really know which would be able to pull away from the other?
I know that mine is better in the twisties ( he will grudgingly admit to mine maybe being slightly better) but as far as accelerating from a stop or roll on acceleration I would like to know before I tell him to prove it or shut up about this constant need to one up me. As far as riders go, I'm about 250lbs and he has got to be 350 maybe pushing 375 at a guess.
What real world input do you guys have?
I'm not usually the "boy racer" but I'm starting to feel the need to defend the VFR and put this "liter bike" as he likes to call it in its place.... If I can.

    Why?
Just shrug it off and tell him "whatever"
Perhaps you could buy him a penis enhancer or a book on insecurity.
This sort of crap has the potential for someone to come off whilst trying to "prove" something. You might be the better rider on the better bike, but if you are having a bad day..........
I always compare it to a round of golf, you can't go out saying I'm going to play great today, sometimes you have an off day. Losing a couple of golf balls is one thing, losing your own two is a little more costly.

Drag race against him - thats the only way to silence these people....

    However,

Why do you care - in 5 years yours will still work perfectly & he will be on his 3rd....

At 375-ish, I'm gonna say that you could hang with him if not walk away. Race him and find out. You didn't have anything on him before, so there's nothing to lose.

Don't come back here if you don't win though...

Torque does not make a bike fast. Good lowend torque makes for good towing and two up riding with less need to down shift. Horsepower per pound (regardless of torque) equals acceleration when teamed up with close ratio gearing and a rider that can keep in the power band. The VFR800 and VStrom 1000 have similar pounds:hp ratios, but it is a reasonable assumption that the VFR has a more closely spaced transmission for sporty acceleration, while the adventure bike vstrom has a wider spaced transmission for long distance touring. Assumptions aside, the proof is in the pudding, a stock VFR800 runs low 11's at close to 120mph, while the vstrom runs high 11's a little over 110. There is no debate, with equally skilled riders, the VFR will walk away from the VStrom. But, if you put two newbs on the bike and do a top gear pull from 1000 rpms, the lowend torque of the vstrom should allow it to pull away from the vfr.

Real world results ... stock the VFR pulls away every time.

    2002 VFR800
    0-60 = 3.4s
    1/4 Mile = 11.3s
Top Speed = 155mph (source MCN)

    2002 V-Strom 1000
    0-60 = 3.6s
    1/4 Mile = 11.6
Top Speed = 130mph (source MCN)

The V-Strom isn't geared for speed the way the Interceptor is.

Of course this is dependant on the rider.

Thanks for the quick replies. I was hoping to hear from someone that rides with someone on a Vstrom as well and has tried them out head to head. I usually do just shrug it off but this time it pissed me off a little. Maybe I'll just wait till the next ride and when he gets on the throttle I will too and see what happens. I do know that I would back off way before he would as he doesn't seem to care about where he speeds and by how much.

If you go from a high speed roll, at high revs (over 10k), you are going to embarrass him badly. Just make sure to do it in a safe environment like you were saying, sense he seems like the type to be more concerned with winning than living.

Vstrom is a horror show on wheels, even if by any slim chance he wins he still loses. You have the better performing bike for it's size and you have a far better looking bike, by any standard. Let him squawk about his shit show on wheels, he know's deep down he wants a VFR but knows his extreme girth won't allow such wonderful things. Be safe and dust his ass when you have the road to.

Even if the specs were identical, he's a lot heavier than you and doesn't have the HP difference to overcome the weight and aerodynamics. Take it to the TRACK and find out.

I usually wait until they think they're hauling ass, then I pass them on the inside! Scares the shit out of them then humbles them up real quick!

(I kid of course, this type of riding is not for the street!)

I'm with those who say 'don't bother' (I know it's tempting though) ... if he's really a friend, you push it, and tragedy happens, you want the feeling that comes after? ...

What?! you've got to be kidding, I SMH and say walk away, you have nothing to prove. The fact that he thinks he's faster? Just crazy, who needs a friend like that, it's just a disaster waiting to happen. Let him think that. Sheessh at 350lbs. he is way over his head here. Be funny to witness a 500cc sport-bike that knows how to ride with a good bike to weight ratio would eat his lunch. I like OOTVs thinking, of coarse this is on a track.

This is good advice. Do you really care? Why does he care enough to make a big deal about it? Is that all your "friend" has to talk about? Who needs friends like that? The bikes aren't comparable in almost any manner.

General consensus is right, I do have nothing to prove. My friend can be a dick but I don't have to be one too.
I will just wait, one day there will be the right time and place .....
Just like back when I was into off-roading and had a friend with a newer jeep that was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread and was in a "different league" than my old first gen 4Runner. Eventually he realized that it was always me pulling him out or through the bad parts and at his kids insistence he offered to buy it from me. Didn't sell it to him though. Eventually sold it to pay for the VFR that I can ride every day (except in the winter, of course) and never looked back.

What is the perceived aversion to a good old fashioned drag race around here? I'm always down for a nice pull from 2nd to 4th if somebody feels so inclined. It's part of the fun! Just gotta make sure you're in a reasonably safe spot. IMHO of course.
