In Texas you get a bonded title. It is not easy but it is doable. (Once upon a time is was impossible.) You get the bike appraised, the DMV runs the VIN to see if it's hot. You purchase a bond (around $90) to cover any claims. There are never any claims. Then you take the bond, your filled out state paperwork and your proof of insurance to the DMV and they will issue you a bonded title. In three years you can pay the transfer fee and get the bonded designation lifted. I have done this before. It is a pain and it cost about $250 to $300.

It all works out because I have a Ford F150 that gets 16 miles to the gallon. I figure it will cost over $80 in fuel.

Whoa.. after more reading, I'm taking back what I said. That legal title thing has to be right or back away no matter what. like Norm said, Stay home. It's not worth the head aches here. just saying

I do a bit of flipping here in OK, and there's nothing to it. It's nice to be in tight with a Notary though. In the past, I've just had the previous owner sign the title and give me a bill of sale (peace of mind for purchaser that it's not stolen,) gotten it notarized, and then let the purchasing party know that they're responsible for doing a title transfer and paying the excise. All without ever titling it my name. As long as you don't take forever and a day, it's all good.

Do it man, offer him a grand. If you don't wanna drive your pickup, just rent a Uhaul van and strap them to the sides. They're already ugly lol.

I used to live in OKC and the notary thing was the worst. At least, here in Texas, you don't have to mess with a notary.

I wrote him back this morning and I declined. I just didn't want to make that trip. I did tell him that I think his diagnosis of bad injectors was wrong. He needs to test the fuel pump and work back through the system. That's what I would do.

Our beloved Stuka could use the upper cowl and left fairing if you end up getting those bikes....

    I'm in 100% agreement.

I use to enjoy working on stuff. Now my free time is too limited. I'd prefer to spend it riding.

Good call Jim, I keep thinking of the pain you went through when you picked up the VTR, so often these things are just a stab in the dark and you keep your fingers crossed and hope you come out without blowing your money

I'm with Norm. Lots of deals out there when you are ready. Doesn't Stuka ride a dirt bike now?

All I can say is "never say never." I have been emailing the guy. He is a nice guy with a baby on the way and a project that they wife wants gone. It still might be on the table. (I am a sucker sometimes.)

    Hah!
I live in the Detroit area, went to Minneapolis for my 2000.
Fortunately, I had to have my van and trailer in Chicago already, which was nearly half way there.

But it was worth the drive. Sounds like this deal would be worth it too! I'd be up for something like that, if I didn't already have a garage and an outbuilding stuffed to the gills....
