Hey everyone, I have been talking with a guy down in Houston about a 5th gen. It is yellow like mine and has a parts bike with the deal. He wants $1200 for both. The 2000 model is all there, doesn't run but he has heard it run a bit by dribbling gas down the throttle bodies. The parts bike is a 2001 and looks like crap. Is there any market for the parts on the parts bike (wheels, shock, front end, etc)? I figure the 5th gen to be worth around $2400 in running riding condition. I don't want to scrap a VFR (parts bike) if I can get people parts they need.

Seems like this is something you could tackle, that's for sure. However, parting out can be a little troublesome as parts pricing, disassembling, packaging and shipping are all involved with parting it out. However, you could get someone willing to take the rolling chassis. The price seems fair as you are getting a bike with a possible donor bike. I say go with what your gut tells you.

My gut tells me that I could save this bike and maybe make some money. I could also swap the tail piece for the cracked one on my bike. But. . . it is a 7 maybe an 8 hour drive from my house and that is dampening my enthusiasm a bit. My wife keeps asking why I can't find bikes closer?

Without more details it's kind of hard to say, but it sounds like a decent deal to me. If it were local and I could see both bikes I'd probably go for it.

A day's drive is kind of a damper. My wife would actually question why I'm buying them in the first place!

My wife already thinks I am insane. "It's just like the one you have!" she says.

LOL, OML, SMH, IMO, and any other acronym that's fits the bill. Offer a $1000 or a bit less, and go get it. Just maybe the FI on the parts bike is good? Wasn't there some one here that decided to part out his 5th? wonder how that went? No, but really, just how driveable do you think it might be? Is everything else is in good order, tires, battery, brakes, chain, etc . things that make it go? Sounds like maybe this one could be worth it, but you know what they say about A mans junk, is another mans treasure. Yea that all day drive there, then another one back, in Texas, sound flat, as all get out. What's the temps out? ;)

Not only is it flat but it is 103 freaking degrees out there. (It is pine woods around Houston.) My old truck is a crap shoot. Maybe if it was the end of September and it was down in the 80s during the day I might feel better about the drive.

It seems like the deal to me. I love those kind of scores. Get the parts you need, make the whole one run, and sell the rest as a project with a title.

May not be issue at all, but twice he says he has title signed by previous owner which means he has never transferred it yet. So when you go to buy it, he would not be able to sign it over as he would have to have transferred first? It's been a while and forgot how all this works. My thinking is he would have to transfer title to him first and then could sign over. Am I wrong and this all a moot question?

I would jump on it, and if you get it and want to sell some parts from the parts bike let me know.

If he has a bill of sale from the registered owner to him and writes one from him to you then you should be ok, however you might get the license or vin and call the police to make sure its not stolen just to be safe. It sounds like a screaming deal if its clean and he is honest ?

I once drove all the way down to Corpus Christi , TX to buy a BMW K100RS that the guy said had a "good" title in hand. What he actually had was a blue Texas title that had been signed over 4 times on the back, The previous owners just signed the title rendering it worthless. It was a wasted trip. I need to find out just what this title looks like on the back. If he just signed the front , that is one thing. If he signed the back the title will have to be transferred into his name or i will have to get a bonded title. I am not interested in that.

As long as it is not stolen I have friends in the lien sale business. There is company's that do them too, they go by value, so in California under $ 2500 is a 30 day lien. Over $ 2500 is a long lien i think 90 day lien. Its not a big deal. However you have to make sure it is not stolen. Here call your local towing company and ask if they do liens ? PM me if you want

Jim stay home, I'm over driving all over the country picking up stuff I hope to get my money back on or maybe make a couple of bob on the side. Would need to be something special to put 14 hours of fuel in the truck even though your fuel is about 1/3rd the cost of ours
