    Those old flatrackers didn't have brakes at either end. The big change came in the early 1960 when several novice riders were killed at Ascot in just weeks. The AMA dropped the displacement to a max of 350 CCs and mandated brakes for Novice riders. Even then HD produced winners in the form of Aeromacchi 350 singles. Prior to that the Novices, Amateur and the two classes of Expert plates all rode either 500 CC pushrod engines or the HD and Indian 750CC sidevalvers.

    Lots of innovations back then and a fair amount of fudging. Some Triumph riders would swap out the aluminum barrels with a cast iron barrel and paint it with aluminum paint to cop another 150 CCs..
