Any of the motorcycle suspension suppliers will sell parts online.
No hit and miss, there are spring calculators and tested shim stacks for the spring.
You can go to Racetech to work out the spring you need and buy piston kits from them, or buy Pistons and shims separately and make your own.
I believe JD has a good kit for the front, and he does a fairly good rear shock for the 5th gen.
I did my own modified front which I'm very happy with, and used his rear, but if I did it again I would buy a quality rear shock instead.
It all depends how much you are willing to spend, more money means better results.
And if you think you are happy with how comfortable your suspension is Big Jim, it's because you haven't ridden a good set up 5th gen.

I agree with Oz. Daugherty gives personal service and well priced products. Race tech has a great website and calculators, and I found their suggested setups to be very close to optimum for me.

Sonic Springs are also a good source (fitted some to my ST1100 just last night) and cheap.

Front (and rear) suspension discussions this lengthy need to have a dedicated spot?

As for what I did to my VFR today, I am still doing it as I type: Letting my son take it out for a ride. He's a good rider, and will be impressed, I think.

I let my son ride the red VFR before I sold it. He was impressed with the smooth power but still wants my VTR Superhawk.

I am sure these is a suspension thread somewhere.

Tweaked the rear shock damping and nailed it to perfection. It feels so damned perfect and confidence inspiring. I spent 170 quick miles in the twisties this morning on the edges of the tires. I can tell how much fun I had by looking at tire wear....; )

Wow, not what I did to the Viffer, but what it did to me... Put the biggest smile on my face. Had a near perfect twilight evening for a ride. 80 degrees, no wind, nor not much traffic, sunset was beautiful, then the curves just melted away, the Viffer just purred. Talk about being in the zone. Just fabulous.

We had two reasonable winter's days this weekend, so Saturday was an opportunity to get out on the ST1100 and test out the new front springs. Certainly getting better and better but needs a fair effort to get it turned, probably a consequence of the forks staying more extended than they were on the sacked out old springs. I think I will do a VFR trick and lower the triples down on the fork. Also desperately in need of a new back tyre.

Sunday, after a half day of hard domestic labour, it was the turn of the VFR. This was my first daylight ride with the CBR600F4 forks, 6th gen triples and bars. This was great! I had to re-acclimatise to the rapid turn in, and more effort to hold down in the turn (due to wider tyres?) compared to the ST, but what a blast.

I have re-used the valves/shims that I had in the VTR1000F forks, but the damping feels better than ever, maybe a result of more rigid forks, and an adjustable compression bleed. Came back after 180km loving the VFR even more. Got home in time for a garage clean-out and a bit of washing, and a family photo.

My recollection was that I pulled the clip-on off The fork so that I could remove the entire throttle assembly off the clip-on easier, as the cable was not restricting movement. This was on my 6 Gen but the principle should be the same.

    +1

Would have been perfect for my two sons and me at the end of May when we were in NZ for a week.

One thing I know: I'll be back before I get too old to ride. I love the place. Beautiful, and lovely people.

Changed the oil and coolant on the 09. What I used I'll keep secret, not sure I want this thread turning into an oil/coolant thread! I will say that using a T-handle Allen wrench sure does make quick work of the panel bolts. As much as people complain about those Honda plastic clips, I find them really easy to use, just damn pricey!

Got your private chat message - sorry I wasn't too helpful. I was on a trip dealing with some mechanical issues myself at the time.

Let me know if you still need / want help with this.

No worries. I just walked away from it last night. Was looking at for hours. Hit it this morning and it all made sense. Throttle tube came right off had the loosen the cable to get it out of the throttle tube. All good. Thanks for all who added to my brief dilemma. Some times you just need to walk away from it.
