There's that too. Based on the I'll form post and basic misuse of the English language, he must have been in the "No child left behind" debacle!

I have often wondered about these and other car filters like Mobil 1. What concerns me is that motorcycle filters are designed for specific bikes to have their by-pass valve operate at specific pressures that can be very different than a car. This could lead to your oil not even being filtered or only partly filtered. Many people use them and say "never a problem" but that does not mean that it is the best thing for a bike. Even in this reference guide, http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html that was just recently reposed, Purolator themselves say not to use their PL series on bikes, use their ML (fucking made in China) brand. I think I will stick with a good ole Honda filter that I know the valve works at the proper pressures. From what I have read the Purolator is a superior made filter but not sure if its best for bikes.

When you are at bypass psi, there is already something more import to worry about going on.

I think I may have the bypass valve concept backwards. So they don't bypass until there is excessive pressure? For some reason I thought they allowed filtering if there was adequate pressure.

I'm sure some of these failures are legit, but I promise you, as much as it pains me to say this, SOW is probably right - a lot of people are overtightening them.

I think it is mainly there for if the filter is so old/dirty that it stops letting oil pass through, the bypass opens up and allows oil to pass through unfiltered or if it is super cold out and the oil is thicker than honey.

I don't think that is the problem. Look at post 484 in this thread. http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/50894-Kansas-to-Prince-Rupert-BC-Canada-or-Bust!/page17 THAT is the problem. Or at least the gasket problem that I have seen on 3 different filters. The nut seems to be poor welding jobs. Somewhere down the road K&N fucked up their production. I used them for many years on my track bike as it was easy to safety wire the pre-drilled nut and had zero problems. Then the ugly problems started popping up.

The Amsoil filter EAOM103-EA is the recommended filter for the VFR:

Not only more efficient, but filter particles less than 10 microns.
20 Microns is the ISO standard test size.

This again is not a plug for the Scotts filters. that don't wear oot, or lubricate rear tires. Not a great buy if ya don't keep a bike for more than aboot ten oil changes.

They even toss in a really nifty strap wrench.

Seems like it was only yesterday when another of the filter makers had it's turn in the barrel.
