I'd be interested in seeing them do that with a water cooled sport bike, because of needing a thinner oil and the fact that the transmission and engine use the same oil.

Purpose of this particular test was to show that Amsoil Synthetics don't break down or oxidize under extreme heat (500 degrees), air cooled twins at continuous low speed with poor cooling. Our water cooled bikes would should never reach those temperatures. Do synthetics cool better than other oils, one would have to compare the specific heat indexes of each. Do synthetics run cooler due to lower friction, most definitely.

I'm glad to see this discussion, and read other owner's comments on temperature.
I was not expecting such huge temperature swings. My bike seems to run right at 176 - 178 when cruising on an expressway or country road at 60 - 70 mph.
But in town, and stopping at several long lights, it can go up 50 degrees. That just seems outlandish to me

It is crazy but the VFR is not the only Honda to do this. The Gold Wing has split radiators and also have the wild temperature swings.

When I had a Suzuki swift GT(1.3L twin cam), the first winter I couldn't get much heat from it. Put regular (dino) oil in and the engine warmed up and I got heat, put Amsoil back in.... engine ran cold. Keep in mind this was when I lived in Ottawa, when it was -30c, -10c or warmer I had heat. Read into that what you want. I know what it tells me.

Saw a high today of 100 on the bike's ambient sensor (with humidity felt like 110 :hangme:). On the highway bike was running 185-190ish. Stop and go was around 220-224. Temps you listed are pretty standard low 80's or lower.

Mine runs 177 on the highway in summer heat. In stop-and-go, it will hit 218 to 220 no problem.

Took my 94 for a 170km ride through the country side. First time I have ridden her since New Year's Eve. Took a minute to start but the then idled and ran perfectly.
Great ride but I nearly froze.
Such a great bike to ride, even compared to my black scooter. It's like taking an old girlfriend for a nostalgic ride and remembering why you went out with her.

So out riding across town to sister's house to check on and feed the dogs since they are on vacation. It was 101 degrees here yesterday! Bike temp running at 215-220 when on highway! Kind of high temp making me nervous but never had any problems before (coolant change is due too). The air here going down the highway is just frickin' HOT! I have one of those cool vests you soak and wear and definitely makes a big difference. So go check on dogs again this morning at 8am when temp is cool 81 degrees outside and air feels cool too and bike running at 177 degrees down highway. Expect high today of 102. I hate July and August in TX.

Edit: Wow! swear I did not read the posts above about temps before writing this but scrolled back up to read past posts after this. Pretty much the same thing. I feel better about my temps now.

Feeling it here in KS too. I'm so done. It already feels like 102. Moto temp held at 195 on highway on Friday unless I exceeded 6,000 rpm. Then moto temp up to 215 on highway going 90-100. Haven't ridden since. Yesterday it felt like 116 here. Gave moto and myself a break.

To be honest, my concern is more about your sister's dogs! the VFRs seem to run hot but never read a story of one blowing it's top. Hopefully they're house dogs. That is some high temps for them to be stuck outside.

Yeah, if you're going from city riding with bike temps around 220, you're going to need a couple miles worth of highway at 60+ to bring the bike back down to the 180's, if it's that hot out. Jumping on a side road with like a 45 limit, your bike will still be running 200+.

No, dogs are fine. They are big dogs that grew up outside on ranch and inherited by sister when brother-in-law's father passed away. Great spoiled dogs though. They have plenty of shade and shaded swimming pool with the beach type entrance so they can gradually walk down into the water and swim or just wade in the shallow area. I am going over this afternoon and letting them in house for a while anyway since sister staying extra day on vacation.

We let dogs sleep inside with a/c overnight so that is why we have to go over in morning and evening to let them in and out.

Washed Storm today - yesterday I re-glued the grips, fixed my throttle lock, and removed the balance beads from the front tire and rebalanced manually.

She's all ready for another moto-adventure starting next weekend.

So, Paul came over yesterday to look at the '02 VFR. He was impressed with the running of it after i took him down the Leonard Hills road to Randolph. He rode the red VFR and I took the yellow Y2K VFR. He ended up buying a different '02 (not mine) that had less miles and was more pretty. Paul is a great guy and I hope he finds his way to this forum. I did give him the directions so he knows how to get here.

I am resigned to keeping this bike so this morning, before it got too hot, I took it to Sherman to show my dad. I could pull up to the back door of the nursing home and we could look it over together. He liked it very much. All told I put about 170 miles on it and declared it a good bike.

Took the 6 gen down to Newport Beach to get some dog treats for my "fur child". Rode PCH back up to Seal Beach and had lunch there and then rode back home. Similar to yesterday, coast was in mid 70's.

To be honest, that is the one thing that has kept me in California, the ocean! The wife too actually. As expensive as it can be here, this is the one luxury we feel is worth the higher cost of living. Being 10 miles from PCH and the OC beach communities is something we try and take advantage of, particularly Seal Beach. The wife and I are always hanging out there. My friend from Nebraska called in "Mayberry by the Sea" (Hopefully you get the Mayberry reference)

If you ever find yourself in this position again, partially block your grill or radiator so you don't have so much cold air hitting it. In 98, I had a brand new Jetta that worked great, but in the -35° temps around Deerlodge Montana on our way back from Christmas vacation. It couldn't stay warm and it was Dino oil. If you look at big rigs in cold states, they'll have covers over their front grill to help the truck hold heat in the engine. When I lived in Montana, someone's we did this to help.

If you are referring to my earlier post about the Swift GT, I had already tried that and it didn't help. Only putting the dino in made the difference.
