Not that, this: Yes, to a point shorter gearing will get the bike rolling with less clutch slip needed

Running around at higher revs is only going increase overall engine wear and decrease overall fuel mileage all the while requiring a speedo-healer. The VFR isn't geared so ridiculously tall that getting it going in 1st is an overall problem that needs fixing.

Now it is clear, finally. I never said reducing the clutch use is to reduce wear. You made a bad assumption.

All of your other judgments are incorrect as well. For gas mileage getting a vehicle to speed faster can lower gas use as the throttle is on for less time, the wear and pressure on a crankshaft is much higher at extremely low RPMs, and most VFRs can use a speedo-healer, sprocket changes notwithstanding. For you to claim that 1 tooth change is really loud vs. stock now has reached the level of nonsense. It can be difficult to tell but I assume that this whole rant was a trolling and the joke is on me. Maybe it is just time to block you along with the other two trolls.

Boatdetective, I hope you haven't run out of here, screaming from this exchange. People here in general are very supportive of each others' ideas.

There are thousands of owners who change their gearing for this exact reason. I gave the guy a suggestion and we went through this rant because you personally don't like the change?

I'll make sure to IM you each time I am considering an upgrade. I'd hate to make a change to my bike that you disagree with. That would be disaster!

NONSENSE! For this engine that goes 200,000 miles, redline is a factor in wear. Long term dogging is a factor in wear. Being higher in the rev range on average, no way!

    Hey Knight,

I think you are the type of person who either doesn't realize that your attitude comes off as elitist, or maybe you do and pretend not to care because of your ego. You take daily jabs at people with your passive aggress approach as well as your comments. You are fairly new to riding, yet you continue to put up these snobbish quotes (like today) that were implying that people are either ignorant, or just plain cheap asses because they want to get the best deal that we can based on the money that we have. Of course people want to save money and get the best deal that we can. You make ignorant and/or snobbish comments each day about others in general, because in short, you think you know better than most or are better than most. I know you will mostly come on here and dispute that comment, but it is how it reads based on your daily snob report.

Just saying to get off your high horse Mr High and Mighty, and realize that you do not know it all and you are not better than the rest of us even though you think you are. If you are so mighty and knowledgeable, why aren't you off curing cancer somewhere, or figuring out how to allow human to survive space travel to Mars....instead of hanging with us simpletons? I for one could use a break from your daily drivel, as I am sure could many others.

Let's all just take a deep breath here ... Knight means well and is always willing to help others.

No need to turn this thread sour. Let's all just agree to disagree here and move along.

    Thanks Jeff-

Seeing that my OP was pretty much the same old, "help me justify buying another motorcycle," I'm a little shocked at what this turned into. The pissing match over a simple sprocket change is really silly. Do you guys really fly off the handle and call each other names this easily?

I'd have to venture this is an exaggeration? Second, yes, but I get your point.

A pissing match over a couple of teeth on a sprocket is silly. The tone of voice expressed by this asshole Knight is what pisses more than just a few of the members off. I think summing the dude up," My way or the highway" fits.

Two posts and passing judgement on the members as a whole is even sillier than most of the BS that Knight posts.

Yeah first gear should top out at an indicated 60 mph, which is less than 60 actual (with factory gearing on a sixth gen).

I do get what knight is saying about sprocket kits reducing the amount of clutch slip necessary to get off the line at the same pace as a factory geared bike using more clutch slip.

Fun fact, on a sixth gen with an extra tooth up front (17/43) the speedometer is dead on accurate, but like knight was saying, it just needs more clutch to get off the line in a hurry.

Back when I had a one down up front (15/43), you needed barely any clutch slip to get going and the speedometer showed 80, but was 70 actual.

I tried a one down three up (15/46) for a little while and it required basically zero clutch work. You could drop the clutch at idle off the line and it would still pull through like a bat out of hell, standing up on the back wheel. Shit it would pull second gear from a stop, with not to much clutch work. I want to say the one down three up would indicate 60 mph but be at 50 actual.

Is that what he means? Maybe I was a bit hasty but as always, anyone is entitled to my opinion. Allow me at this time to offer some compromises

Instead of tossing his ass under a bus we could toss him under:

    A Peterbilt semi
One of those triple haulers used in OZ
    A HumVee
An Iron Ore pit mine truck
    A Harley

as a democratic side note any other suggestions are of course welcome.
