Hi, new to the forum and also to a VFR800.

I recently purchased a US spec 2007 Honda Interceptor and have noticed that the two front amber turn signals are always illuminated unless the button is pressed to turn left or right.

Does anyone know how to disable these so they only illuminate when turn signal button is pressed??

    Many Thanks from the UK

I'd think if you just cut the third lead it would work that way (the running lead is going to be the other wire that is not green or orange or light blue, I forget what it is at the moment).

Thanks for the reply, where would I disconnect the wire from? Many thanks.

Well, I imagine the connector is a 3 pin plug; there's no way you can unplug only one lead, unless you had some specific tools to pull the wire from the block. You'll need to cut it.

Cutting the wires at the harness isn't necessary, if you take out the bulb and cover one of the 4 terminals on the base of it with a piece of tape and then reinstall to see if you get the desired result... If not, repeat this process by covering the other terminals one at a time until you get the right one

Amber running lights aren't allowed in the UK, only for turn signals.

You can just pull the wire from the three wire connector. If you look at it from the front you will see a small notch in the center of the opening. You need a small paper clip or micro screw driver, like for glasses, and insert it in to push a small tab down flat. It's just a little prong/tab in the center of the metal connector that sticks up and catches/locks in to a notch in the plastic connector so it doesn't slide backwards and leave the wire come out.

Take a look at a crimp on metal connector that gets crimped on to the wire. You will see the small prong raised above the rest of the top surface. That's what needs to be pushed down to unlock. All electrical connectors that fit in plastic block connectors have this prong.

Here's a vid for molex connectors, basically the same. NEVER cut the wires, remove them instead.

With a standard dual filament 12volt 21/5watt bulb and a three wire connection you could do that Grey. It's simply a matter of disconnecting the Light Blue wire with a White stripe on the right front turn signal/marker light (Red arrow in pic 1) and disconnecting the Orange wire with a White stripe on the left front turn signal/marker light (Yellow arrow in pic 1).
Disconnecting those two wires would disable the front marker lights but still leave the front turn signal functions operational.

Problem here is Biggus has an '07.

In '06 Honda radically changed the wiring on the US model VFR800's. Info I have says that instead of using dual filament 12volt 21/5watt bulbs up front in the turn signal/marker light positions they went with single filament 12volt 21watt bulbs.

They then used a single Light Blue wire with a White stripe to supply power for both the turn signal and marker light functions for the right front (Red arrow in pic 2) and a single Orange wire with a White stripe to supply power for both the turn signal and marker light functions for the left front (Yellow arrow in pic 2).

It doesn't appear to be a simple matter of disconnecting a wire to disable the marker light function on the '06 and up US model VFR800's. It appears that the single filament 12volt 21watt bulbs are hard wired to be ON at all times for the marker light function and the turn signal position relay is then used to pulse the power signal to make the bulbs flash for the turn signal function.

Here, you can run your cars and trucks with just the amber running lights and full tail lights without the headlights if you wish. It is a position on the switch that is in between off and on. It has been that way ever since I can remember and that was really around the time Jesus walked on water. Mind you, I don't know why someone would do that. Maybe they think it is cool.

I am a proponent of full headlights all the time for safety. Daytime driving lights have been federally mandated on all cars and trucks here in Canada since around 1989 or there about. In the early days of this, it was just the headlights come on automatically on start up. Now they all come with dedicated lower wattage daytime running lights. Most time, I manually turn on my headlights when I go out on the highway regardless of the time of day. My old man always did the same at least as far back as when he used to travel the country side for work which started in the early 50's. Saved his bacon a few times.

A mirage will set up within a few hundred meters on the prairie highways, especially in the winter. Smaller vehicles like cars and bikes totally disappear in these mirages until it is almost too late for those who pay less attention to their driving than they should. Your headlights will shine through a mirage.

What kind of idiocy is that ? Amber lights are a useful safety feature. On bikes, front AND rear.

I shall jolly well speak with the Queen about this cockup when we next meet and ask her to sack her Transport Minister forthwith. :eagerness:

Oddly, yellow headlights are allowed in the UK. Consequently, I run one white and one yellow on some of my bikes to increase conspicuity. The reason yellow headlights are allowed might be due to the UK being in proximity to France, where yellow headlights used to be common (though not any more). The rule about running lights is that only white position lamps are allowed in the front--except where incorporated into headlamps showing yellow. It could be that the "no amber" rule was designed to prevent turn signals from being lost in a sea of amber running lights. I'm not sure I agree, but I don't think it is an idiotic idea.

    Ciao,

I believe the reason behind the yellow headlights has a lot to do with the high presence of fog in GB. The theory was that yellow light is not as blinding to the human eye when it reflects back from hitting fog. I believe that to some degree. Both amber and red are far less blinding than white. I suppose this is why most fog lights from the past were yellow. But more important for fog lights, is that they are as low as possible to the ground so that the plane of the light is as far removed from the plane of your eyesight that you are looking down over the light rather than through it.

The same principal can be applied to snow white out conditions that are cause from ground drifting snow rather than new falling snow. This conditions are hazardous to vehicle such as typical cars but a truck driver is less affected by it because he is looking down through the blowing snow while a car driver is looking into it.

I remember a date back in 1990 or 91. It was March 1 in any event. We had blowing snow on the freeway and I was trying to respond to dozens of collisions nd was on an area known here as the Sumas Prairie. Daylight. There were times it was difficult to see more than 10-20 feet ahead in my police car. It was a bitch. Cars were flying off the road chasing my partners all over the fucking place and I was asking for the freeway to be closed. My boss, the idiot he was, came along to near my accident scene, stood up on an overpass, and made the grand statement "It's not that bad up here." Two hours later there was a 147 vehicle pile up about 5 miles east at another overpass where I am sure in top, you could see for miles, but at ground level, drivers of cars could see nothing. They ended up closing the freeway for two days dealing with that collision and waiting for the weather to improve.

Yeah the bike I have only has two wires for the running light/turn signal instead of three which earlier models had.

    And then again.....

After studying the '06 and up wiring schematic a bit more in depth it appears that there just might be a way to disable the marker light function on the later model bikes. You'd have to disconnect two wires and then reconnect them in two new positions.

Pic 1 shows the Light Blue wire with a White Stripe and the Orange wire with a White stripe exiting the turn signal position relay. These two wires are continuously powered by the turn signal position relay to supply power for the marker light function.

Pic 2 shows the Light Blue wire and the Orange wire exiting the turn signal position relay. The Light Blue wire is powered only when the Right turn signal is selected and it activates the Right rear turn signal light. The Orange wire is powered only when the Left turn signal is selected and it activates the Left rear turn signal light.

Pic 3 shows how you'd need to rewire your turn signal position relay harness connector plug to disable the marker light function. You'd need to remove the Orange wire with a White stripe from the harness connector plug and reconnect it to the Orange wire. You'd then need to disconnect the Light Blue wire with a White stripe from the harness connector plug and reconnect it to the Light Blue wire.

Theoretically this should disable the marker light function on the bike because the Light Blue wire with a White stripe and the Orange wire with a White stripe will now no longer be continuously powered by the turn signal position relay.

Those two wires should now only be powered when you select either the Right or Left turn signal or the 4 way flashing hazard lights.
