Some of your reply was within my quote tags, so it looked like it came from me. If we respond in between different comments we have to insert an end quote tag, then type our new message outside of the prior poster's tags. It can be a chore. (Not even sure I am doing it the best way, the "multi-quote" system is actually confusing to me as I always seem to have to edit tags.)

You can start the bike cold and put your hand on the radiator. Since the thermostat is supposed to be closed it should stay cold. If the thermostat is stuck open, you'll feel the radiator warm as you watch the temp gauge rise, 80°,90°,100°,110°, etc. The radiator should not do this but instead should go from stone cold to blazing hot when the thermostat opens at 180°F.

Of course the cool way to test would be a laser thermometer, which would also prevent the burning of the hand. I don't have one of those but wish I did LOL. So always be careful.

The long warmup of your bike is pretty much the hint. I asked these guys and the bikes that are working correctly warm up in 2-3 minutes in 30°F weather.

I have a suspicion that bikes that sit lock up the thermostats because they aren't lubricated by coolant. But alas I don't really know and would love to see a study of why so many of these stick.

Sorry about the rookie mistake. I should have known better on the quotes.

I'll do the hand test tonight after work and see if I need to add a thermostat to the list of things to do this weekend.

The thermostat replacement is kind of painful, just in case you haven't see that procedure yet. (Who sticks a thermostat in the V of the engine underneath all of that stuff?) If you don't see newer vacuum hoses through throughout the throttle body and newer coolant knuckles as well, you might want to refresh them while in there. Maybe the dealer did these items which would be nice. From all of the miles it probably would have been required at that last major service.

I haven't had a chance to see what I'm getting into yet. Great info tho thanks Knight.

I'll spend some time tonight doing some research on the ins and outs. I also Need to find a good shop in my area that I can trust to do the bigger things because I'm sure they will pop up.

GoingVFR - welcome to the MadHouse.:welcome:

Kudos for adding photos with your first post.

Forget about the miles and price - as long as you are happy - that is all that matters.

I see several of the LA/Cali riders :scubalong:have already put in an appearance and if you wanted help checking the bike over or with the service, just post up and you may find someone nearby will be happy to help especially if you have a well stocked beer fridge:drink:. If you have not spotted it check out the recent R3 posts which will give you an idea of just how many VFR riders are in your area and identify some stunning roads to maybe test out that V4.

    :vtr2::vtr2::vtr2:

    Take care

He was calling you "GVFR" shortening your nickname, saying to push the dealer or shop for those supposed records.

Tale: The guy I brought from told me the 16,000 service was done at X dealer. The title had that dealer on it so I know it was the purchase place. Okay so I call the dealer. "We lost all of our records."

Can you say, nothing he told me was done to the bike? And his "buddy" at the dealer was probably complicit in hiding that fact, rather than turning over their actual records, "We did nothing to that VIN."?

Lol ahh I obviously thought it was a shop that had a name close to mine. Kinda thick that way sometimes

Im 90% sure he's full of but will continue to ask until he tells me not to. Like your guy he was very adamant about having access to the paperwork.

Thanks Ski, totally agree about the mileage and cost.

I'm going to do the post up thing and see who's around. It'll take help whenever I can get it and it's always worth the for the knowledge.

Thanks scubalong! Stoked to be part of the madness!

Happy to bring some IPA's down. Just tell me when and I'm on my way. Are you around this weekend???

Searching the valley right now for break pads and an air filter. Already have the oil and oil filter but hoping to find the rest so I can do the wrenching this weekend.
