    How to change your avatar:

    Top of screen, SETTINGS.

    Mid-left screen EDIT PROFILE PICTURE

Get a factory service manual. Not sure on this site where to get it nowadays, but at vfrdiscussion it is easily found in the downloads section. I like paper so helminc or ebay is good. There will be recommendations in the manual.

If those fluids have been in there for a few years, which is typical of bikes that have not been ridden, you are going to want to change everything now. As for future changes, it is good to keep the bike systems more pristine than you might for a car which is more robust. One year (or more often based on mileage) for the oil, and yearly or bi-yearly changes for all of the other fluids.

Test your thermostat. These tend to stick open, and drying out from sitting there for years may cause a problem. So start the bike cold, keep your hand on the radiator. If it warms slowly along with the engine that is indicative the thermostat is stuck open. Otherwise it should stay cold, then get hot all at once when temp hits 180°F.

Once you have fresh gas and put some miles on it: If it does not start on the 1st try or you have severe vibration when cruising at light throttle at 35 mph, then tune the starter valves.

Thanks for the advice Knight! Would you kindly send me a link for the 2007 service manual please? I also have a question about temperature, what is the hottest temperature reading I should have when the bike is idling and when im riding at hiway speeds? In the summer time? Right now i notice that when Im on the hiway the temp seems to go up quick--the highest i seen it was 225 degrees Farenheight while riding the freeway and about a little less than 200 at idle--is this normal? When im riding locally the fan comes on and off -- And to add to your T-stat statement, if my T-satat was stuck open, wouldn't the bike overheat? Thanks again!

You must join that forum to get the downloads. But it is easy to find them there, and I don't know where these are kept here.

I have a 5th gen and the heat is probably different from yours, so others with a 6th can chime in. The way I see it your temps are backwards. For example, it should heat up when stopped and the airflow has stopped, and cool off when moving. For example I see 220 when stopped in hot summer weather (90°F here). On the freeway it will drop down to 200°. Cooler weather it can stay cooler, say 180°F on a 60°F day. That said your temperature range is typical for hot weather. This engine runs hot, not at 180°F like people might think.

A stuck open thermostat flows coolant even when cold, thus keeping the engine too cold. For example, mine took 40 minutes to heat up to 180° on a 60° day. Others with no problem have said that their bike heats up in a couple minutes even in 30°F weather. Stuck open is a problem with cooler weather and you may not see symptoms in hot weather.
