Unless your wheels are beat up and need stripping, check out a commercial shop for a second opinion. The boutique shops and the commercial shops use the same materials and processes.

Curious, what is the approved (read, safe to mount tires) dry time for painted wheels? I know there are variables, but in general.

Meaning repainted wheels?? Automotive paints for the most part are two component save the stuff that is needed to be added by choice or to correct a condition. Some paints are and some are not two component. Lacquer is one example and comes in both hot solvent and as an acrylic. Another is highquality alkyds sometimes called oil base paints. The high quality stuff is boat paint.

Lots of difference in dry time and cure times for the whole bunch. Sorry man, it be what it is.

Wheels can be painted with the tires on or off. Just mask off the tires..starting with some 1/4" masking tape ( I am a dyed in the wool 3M fan) after deflating the tires, then increasing the width of the tape and adding the rest of the masking of choice. More 3M is good here or heavy gauge aluminum foil. Yeah I know a few pesos can be saved by using newspaper but that's not a great idea. Rattlecans? meh...

I have not ever had my wheels powdercoated.. other stuff yes, including tanks. I also have my tires mounted and balanced. The hassle is when it's time for new rubber and the dude doing the tire change is the former five peso an hour lot boy at a dealership. Usually a little chat with the HMFIC saves chip grief short of that fork over a ten spot and tell the dude you want him to be careful. Patting you hip works too on some dudes.

Bottom line? Take your time and don't be suckin any of that stuff into your pipes.

Each of the golds, silvers and other metallic from Prismatic of another supplier is going to look and be different depending on the undercoat. The metallics are transparent or to be really specific transclucent, IOW a black under coat is going to look different than a white undercoat. Same deal if paint is used.

For the dudes with mucho pesos there is also flame spraying. Kind of hard to find an applicator. Maybe Long Painting in Kent,WA. The equipment is like a wire welder on steroids. Molten metal is sprayed on an object.

Alloy wheels would require complete stripping, and acid wash, a flame sprayed coat of nickel followed by a coat of one of the bronzes. Gold? Maybe Bill Gates..

Uses of two coat processes in paint goes back to the 1920s with Dusenbergs. Barris Kustoms in LA was doing candy colors with the pearl basecoats made from herring scales in the 1940s. Even further back this same technique is called glazing. "A transparent film of paint superimposed over another". Not the exact quote but close.

Paint and powdercoat are both films. Dry millage is really fairly thin. Many times in exotic work the millage is specified. The deal here is that if ya put the same amount of paint of the same kind at the same time on a textured surface and do the same on a surface as smooth as a baby's behind. Here we are using as the example, human babies and not pocupines or cats or snakes ect., The final look is going to be different because the paint. powdercoat or coating film is applied or transformed into a liquid and physics dictates that liquids seek their own level.

Your challenge today Mr. Barrett is to find a use for all the crap you put on your wheels when it starts peeing off or melting...this tape will never self destruct. Maybe send AnnMarie some to rewrap a beef stick that she didn't finish.

Sidebar: one of me best mates is named Barrett. We call him Barry. He sells Harley's. His main squeeze is a really nice 1955 K.

LOL ... it's all going in the dumpster when I peel it off.

Already have some chips, but it seems to be holding up fairly well.
