Anne-Marie I'm glad you survived that close call. Hitting the kill switch and coasting in was really smart riding, and I'm sure the engine will be unharmed as a result.

VF1000fe I'm glad to see you are cleared of any fault in this, so put your mind at ease. Can't blame a man that follows good torque procedures.

That certainly makes my mind up about K&N oil filters! What a piece of crap.

I had a nearly similar incident on my then new RF900 after it's first dealer service when they had not tightened the oil filler cap, which fell off and oil sprayed out of that along the right side of the bike. I had a couple of near lowsides in bends before I realised what my problem was.

"Oh man, my heart went out for you, Randy, as I know what it feels like when I've done something for someone, and then there's an issue!"
Did Randy also change the Oil?

I'm so glad it was not Catastrophic, for the Bike and for Her.

Its not my Bike so we're gonna do it by The Book. If anything goes wrong, its not anything we did. We're not Guessing!
We had 3 Hex Nuts to do, and they were all 17mm, so, I put a Short extension on the Torque Wrench and we just made ft/lb changes to the settings as needed.
The Oil Filter is small and hard to torque by Hand, and getting in there is another issue, awkward with Exhaust Pipes in the way, and our hands were Dirty/Oily, so, of course we'll just use the Torque Wrench (19ft/lbs), why wouldn't we?
Besides, there was no taking the Torque Wrench away from her now (I better check, see if I still have it,,..).
The Silver Lining is, she can say to K&N,,.. "Shudup!, we did put it on with a Torque Wrench, to Honda Spec!"

We used the old Aluminum Crush Washer, since it looked almost like new, could hardly tell it was used.
I had a bag of Copper Crush Washers ready on the Bench, just didn't need them.
If you're careful you can get a lot of changes on One Washer.

I still have the Original K&N Oil Filter Box, I can fold it down and mail it.
    It wasn't cheap either ($15.99usd).
But in the end, are they gonna send her another Garbage Filter?
Even just getting $16 back would be an insult.

Well, the inside of that motor is gonna be Whistle Clean now.

As for the Clutch Switch,,.. its unclear if there was a problem, and what was "fixed".
    http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/2006/VFR800+AC/CLUTCH+MASTER+CYLINDER/parts.html
The lever (#13) was changed, and the new looked the same, but is it actually different? Was the Old One put back ON?
The Switch (#6) has an Actuating Plunger, is that what was missing? The switch is a unit, change the whole switch.
Did it Fix the Start Problem?
The Switch may have been Damaged when the Bike fell over, and bits fell out when I changed the Lever.

I should ask her to go on my next Tour. If The Sky starts Falling, she can Shut me Up "What, this is NOTHING!, Wimp, Lemme tell ya what happened to Me!,,.."

Personally, I would poke that old KN oil filter in bag with me and keep it just in case to be sure something does not show up down the road. Sounds like you caught it in time.

They say its not the destination but the journey. Well, you got that right. But, you will look back and laugh at this one day and think what a great trip you had and miss it.

Glad to hear you are back up and running. As Joe Dirt says, ya gotta keep on keepin on. lol

Doesn't that HUGE smile just say it ALL................. "Hey, My names Anne Marie and I don't let it get me down. All these incidents are just minor blips in the rhythm of life."

I may be speaking for just myself, but you know something, there's a lesson here that AM is showing ALL of us. "Whatever life throws your way, Don't let it get you down, just keep smiling and ride it through. LIFE is just like the apex in a corner, one minute your leading up to it, and the next, you're on the way through, around the corner and on your way."

That's OK. I was kinda scratching my head on that one. But you mere mortals do make occasional mistakes, don't you? I don't know what that is like.

A truer comment would be hard to find. If you can look back and make fun out of your misfortune, this makes for interesting stories later. Not that I have any personal knowledge of that you have to realize. I think A.M is going to get good mileage out of this. Some will be kilomerage but you get the drift.

Murphy's law apparently only applies to 6th gens. My 99 has crossed the US four times now without so much as a hiccup.

If the filter was tightened by that nut, its a no no. It's there to remove the filter, not tighten on installation. The material is very thin. It should be installed by hand only.

My buddy learned that the hard way. :(

I'm back in camp, though the WiFi is spotty again. I'll be waiting up for her arrival here.
