Didn't you just recently buy this bike? You think the PO dumped it on the market to get rid of it because of this issue?

As I don't have access to a 6th gen FSM, if you follow that wire (the R/W) it terminates in a relay somewhere behind the dash IIRC. Just can't remember which one. Could it be that a faulty relay is causing enough resistance to heat that wire so much. In a previous post AM mentions something about a sizzling sound coming from the front of the bike IIRC. BUT the part of the wire that was SOOOO hot was the short piece that leads from Fuse B to the connector. The preceding part was warm (maybe even hot) but it was the short piece before the connector that got REALLy hot. The wire from the connector that carried into the main harness was hard to see touch with the battery in place and quickly disappeared within the wiring loom under the battery.

Was looking over on the dark side, LOL, and came across this thread. Take a look at the post by KanadianKen about 5 or 6 posts down on page 1 of the thread. That is the wire on AM's bike that was getting so damn hot.

That wire dealt with by KanadianKen is the wire we Soldered.
Not sure if the Gauge is beefier on the 2006. Was Ok when we Clocked Out.
Current problem may be something else.
I never did see where the Phone Charger is spliced in.

Was a late night getting things done;
Oil & Filter change, take an oil sample in small jar, check for sediment in morning (none),
Added strong magnet to Oil Plug Hex Head,,.. now magnetic (Drain Plug now able to lift 10mm wrench),
Change out bent Clutch lever,
Bend old lever back into shape as Spare,
Tighten Chain,
Refurbish 30A wire connectors, solder,
Check Tire Pressures (right on spec),,..
Some Drama involved with that Fairing.

Each operation was an opportunity for A.M. to learn some Bike Maintenance Skills (she learns fast).
If ya wanna get her a Birthday Present, get a Torque Wrench,,.. she thought that was the Coolest Tool Ever.

Up early, pack, then get stuck in weekday traffic.

As much as I am enjoying following Anne-Marie's trip, I think I'm enjoying reading about the VFRW field service team's exploits even more. Way to go VF1000fe! Cool pictures too. This one made me think that a really easy wheelie was just a clutch drop away...

 

After turning the bike around for AM in my somewhat lofty driveway, I can assure you that a wheelie would likely be quite easy. LOL. As a matter of fact, on the way down the hill to Westside Road...................

Have to get you in touch with a friend of mine in Calgary VF who has my old 1985 VF1000F to see if you can get him out on the road.

 

Just heard from AM earlier. She is rerouting a faster / more direct route to where I am currently camped out in Keystone.

The wiring is giving her major grief. She's upset but keeping a positive outlook. She was considering keeping moving until she gets here but I've asvised her not to push it. A tired rider getting into an accident isn't worth it.

I've given her a contact for one of my acquaintances in Kalispell if she needs it. He works at a power sports dealer there. Though, it sounds like she's not going that way and coming straight here.

Hopefully, we can figure it out

Extraneous

Was thinking about that electrical problem.

If it was built in, by Honda, then all 2006 VFRs should have it.
We should have heard a lot of That problem.
Honda would have issued a Engineering Change to fix/replace fault.

But something has been added to this bike, later.
The Cell Phone Charger.
Home Made install? Where is it? Soldered and Heat Shrink? (or Not), stuck in a Hot Place?
A.M. gave us a Clue,,.. said the Cell Charger has stopped working.
Is it a Authentic Samsung 12v/5v 500ma charger? (USB standard)
USB 1amp?, USB 2amp? Does it have its own Inline Fuse?
Are other wires in that area affected?
Does this Cell Charger use the White and Green data lines to "talk" to the Cell for Charge Current Management?
Since its an Emergency, I recommend a Wire Cutter style removal, get it outa there!
Charge the phone some other way. If the Cell goes dead, live with it (or without it, I do,,..).

Reduce the Complexity of the problem by Elimination.
I wish this woulda happened while it was in the garage.
But in the garage we tested the bike, without the Cell plugged in.

I have installed a similar USB style supply for my GPS.

This could be Completely Off, but it fits so far.

I just wanted to pop in here, I just realized something about the cell charger. I hat one on a friends vt750 and while it worked like a hot damn the wiring did heat up (badly insulated or just drawing too much now that most chargers pull up to 5V at 2.1amps and no just the 1amp or 500ma) the newer chargers definitely should be isolated from the rest and covered by their own fuse did the same on my 5th gen, to be safe i added an additional switch to be able to turn it off as well.

The problem could definitely be in that area, especially since most chargers draw power even if no device is attached. So it may be an easy fix by putting in an inline switch on the quick allowing for the charger to be only turned on when absolutely needed.
