hey guys I have a 2004 vfr 800, it has a crazy motor knock going on. some people are telling me that it's the cam chain tensioner. I'm not sure what it is, if anyone could help me out id appreciate it.

I can't access that clip on my phone but cam chain tensioners do cause a knockng sound. Mine were done right aboit the same mileage as what you have now.

Does it go away / get quieter once the bike is warmed up? If so, then likely the cam chain tensioners.

Have the valves clearances been checked / done?

Any loss of power? Oil level staying the same? Smell like fuel? Hard to start?

the sound goes away when I'm riding it only knocks sometimes, the oil is the same all the time it does smell like gas sometimes and no loss in power. I haven't had anything checked yet they want 600 just to check it.

$600 to check it? Wow. They must be pulling all the covers off - is that price including new seals / gaskets?

    Sounds like tensioners to me.

I watched your video. Again, I think it's likely the cam chain tensioners.

ok I'll look into prices to get that fixed. is it a hard fix to do it myself? I'm really good at working on cars I don't have much experience with motorcycles.

If you're mechanically inclined as you say you are, it's pretty easy - just takes some time.

There is a good How To on VFRD that shows you step by step how to change them without throttle body removal, which is the majority of the PITA labor if you go by the service manual. The rear one is very easy, do that one first and you will be familiar with doing the front one. An hour to two max. Order the mandatory 2 cover bolt washers and an extra mounting and cap bolt to be safe.
