My old 5th gen runs a very steady 13.7V on the move and has given not a lick of trouble since I fitted a new battery 18 months or more ago. I have a RR out of a Ducati, the only thing I keep a close eye on is the stator/RR 3-wire plug which seems to get a bit of occasional corrosion, and presents as a reducing charging voltage. Maybe I wash my bike too much?

I wish I could find this old Internet thread where the owner's dealer told him this, that VFR owners are too meticulous and are washing their bikes too often. It was in direct relation to failed rectifiers if I recall correctly.

Spent some time in the dark and rain trying to track down any glaring problems with the charging system. Went through the battery of battery testing. Jeff helped with questions, suggestions, and analyzing photos. Nothing I looked at tonight seems to be an issue. Thankful to have spent time on it now before taking off. 5 days to go!

Only concern I have now is your starter circuit .... I'm thinking it's likely a bad ground, weak starter relay, or a dead spot on your starter.

I can't think of any other reason that your battery would test good, charging system test good, but then leave you stranded with a clicking starter / starter relay.

Things happen for a reason, check all connections and ground points for any corrosion, hate to see you get stranded.

Another resource you should consider is Lois Price. I have read two of her books. The first "Lois On The Loose" details her ride from BC down to the tip of South America. She did the ride solo on a small dual sport. Her second book "Red Tape & White Knuckles"was about the ride from London to Cape Town. She details a run in with a group of drunken teen soldiers on the train that made me truly frightened for her safety. Her adventures make North America seem tame by comparison. I think safety, while riding solo, is something than can be addressed by being vigilant and aware of your surroundings. If something doesn't feel right trust your instincts.

I had a long talk with Vanessa Lawson a lady that frequents our group rides. She ride a Gold Wing and takes off solo for long trips. She said that you learn to trust your feelings. When talking to strangers she makes sure she doesn't discuss routs or where she plans to stop. It's best if people do not know where to expect you to show up. She also, at times, feigns a partners or that there is a group of riders just behind. There is safety in imaginary numbers. She also travels armed but I wouldn't suggest this in Canada.

Just amazing!!!! I'm excited to leam so much from the really seasoned pros!!! Thank you for the references and for sharing Vanessa's advices. It's so exciting to talk about where I'm headed, so I'll have to make the conscious effort to not overshare while on the road.

I'll share here when I can or follow my Twitters. :) I'll be prudent about sharing with those I encounter on the road.

When were you expecting to be in Vancouver? To get there, you are likely to ride within a mile of my place. If I am back from Winnipeg, a meet is in order.
