So, I am looking at my 5ther and wondering if anyone has put a tail section from a different sportbike? The back of the 5th looks so heavy, especially with the seat cowl. I was just thinking it would slim the lines and make it look cool. Just wundrin'

OK, it looks like someone has. I would personally go with a high mount or stock mount pipe or have it bent to match the lines of the bike, but I like the idea of a smaller ass.

In my musings of what else I want to do to my 99'er, since I need to replace the footpeg mounts, are there any aftermarket rear sets for the 5th?

I think the tails for the GSXR K5 would look good, maybe the K6 as well though I'm not sure how you'd mount it up.

No... I wanted GP shift as well but I didn't realize until later that Honda built the rearsets into the swingarm pivot piece. I've got a 6th gen swingarm pivot that I want to swap, provided I actually get the bike working...

That piece is called the 'cusion.' I have one as well and have a 5th gen that I'll be attempting the swap on. I think someone had done it on VFRD, so it appears to be possible. I'll post up if/when I get to it.

Sweet. I wish you lived closer; we could just do them both at the same time haha.

that would be cool. I'll probably get to mine mid june-ish...depending on how other projects go. Hopefully it doesn't require custom spacers...
