Little metal piece in the bottom of front master cylinder

    I searched around, but didn't see anything resembling what I'm looking at.

    Doing a stainless braided brake line swap on my 2001 VFR800FI. Cleaning out the residue in the front master cylinder, I noticed this little metal piece that looks like it may have been a cover/guard over the holes in the bottom of the cylinder. My question is, which way does it go back in, or should I just leave it out and go from there?

    My recollection is that the part with the hole in it goes into the cutout section and the other part sits over the return hole, not directly on top of the hole, it shouldn't block the hole just sit over it. If this is not easy to understand once you get back to it with the piece in hand, it should make more sense.

    Not so mysterious; when you squeeze the lever it displaces some fluid back out of the tiny return port. Without that shield you can eject it clear out of the reservoir when you are bleeding brakes with the cap off.

    Fred and I were bleeding the brakes on an old Kawasaki back in the day and when he released the lever he was looking down into the reservoir it squirted him directly in the eye. After the screaming had stopped and his eye was washed oot I walked over to see how he managed to do something so fucking stupid and promptly squirted myself in the eye. Very useful little doodad when morons are aboot.

    Only mystery is that the '83 SM doesn't show orientation, just like the manual doesn't identify the fork tubes for left and right (sliders are obvious). There is a slight difference, had to take apart a spare fork to be sure!
