I'm trying to determine for sure that my radiator fan is bad, and if so where to buy a new motor.

I jumped the motor using the battery. This was with the radiator on my lap. Is this sufficient ground?

    Thanks

Um, no. Actually, as I was trying to fall asleep last night it dawned on me that the temp switch may not be grounded. In other words, I have a hot lead and ground from the wiring block, but if the temp switch is not activated it creates an open circuit. If it activates, it goes to ground which allows the fan to turn on. I'll have to check this theory when I get home tonight.

Test the fan by applying power to its main electrical lead, a 2-prong connector on the right side. Green is ground, duh !

With the fan properly bolted to the bike, touching the single fan switch wire to ground should kick the fan into action. (if the key is ON and fuse is good)

By fan switch wire, you mean the lead coming off of the temperature switch, correct?

Thanks again. The fan works fine. I did the Ohm test described in the shop manual. No reading on any test, hot or cold. I will be picking up a new temp switch today. On another note, how do I wire in a manual switch? I want the temp switch to do what it is supposed to, but it would also be nice to be able to switch on the fan when I want.

On my 2003, I used a heavy duty 20A relay to parallel the stock switch. This allows a small switch to control relay. When relay is actuated, it will ground the fan motor just like the thermal switch. Fan draws a lot of current.

Tap the wire going to the fan switch, and connect it to one terminal on a SPST heavy duty switch; the other switch terminal wire goes to ground.
