So ... I feel like such an idiot. I used to hate, fear, and loathe these fasteners. Never break another again!

Yesterday, I finally figured out their secret, and they are ingenious little fasteners!

    03f27f6025e0754aa3b7cf18e3d7564d.jpg

So, these little bastards - I used to think you had to pry the middle push button part out to remove them. WRONG!!! DEAD WRONG!!!

Simply push them in even FURTHER. If it is flush - you have not pushed it in all the way. Push until the pin is all the way in and RECESSED. It will relieve the pressure from the fastener and it will come out easily.

Once you have it out, you gently pry the outer tabs away slightly and reset the center pin to the position shown in the image.

    I feel so dumb now.

I think Honda has a fascination with those kind of clips. For at least the last 10 years the roof grab handles in all Honda cars have been held in with a depressed center style clip. They also use twist style locking rings and hubs to hold the sun visor pivot mounts in place. Once figured out the clips seem somewhat ingenious, but they are a PITA until the secrets are revealed.

Now if we could find them where they don't cost $1.25 each. On a bike festooned with them.

Thank you, thank you. I'm getting ready to pull the front fairing off my ST1300 and this tip will save me a HUGE amount of cursing and grief. Jeff you are not alone in how you've been removing these clips, because I've been doing exactly the same.

I get one of these for the engine cover on my Celica. If one of you determines that a part matches up well with the VFR can you post the part number please?

I have not seen these clips anywhere except from Honda, however Lowes do stock the well nuts, which is probably what you heard.

I bought some aftermarket fasteners, but the best fasteners are huge -my R+G sliders bolt them down with a 19mm nut-never fall off

I will use zap straps before I ever buy one of those fucking clips again. Last time I bought one of those when the bike was in the shop and one got broken, was 2010 and they cost $4.49 each back then.

These are a far better clip. Easier to put on and they fit tighter too. Easy to remove and reset. And one hell of a lot cheaper when ordering from BOLT. Even with the flat rate $5.00 shipping charges to Canada from California, a package of 10 of these clips was under $11.00.

It is the M6 clips you want. I only have a couple of the OEM clips left on my bike. Someone else here has a line on some clips that are even cheaper.

I have the service manual - but I didn't see that bit in there. What page is that on?

You can pick them up a lot cheaper than $4.49 each ... they are still expensive for what they are though. That said, now that I know how the work, I'll probably never have to replace another again for a long time.

I do feel your pain though, my old VFR I just went out and bought GM body clips to replace the OEM ones.

At any rate - glad I was able to help so many. I know it frustrated the living shit out of me, but now it's super easy to remove them without stress.
