Hey: Looking for that wrinkle gold/brown paint that's on my '86 VFR. It's that the stuff on the crankcase covers and valve covers. Have spent long time searching this site and the UK's VFR Club. No luck. Any leads much appreciated.

Years ago wrinkle paint was available in bulk in many colors. What Honda used was probably made in Japan. What is available now are aerosols made by Sherwin-Williams under several names. ie Krylon , VHT ect.

The color selection is limited mostly to black, red and maybe white. Powdercoating may be an alternative. There are wrinkle finishes that are powdercoats.

The alternative is to strip the covers, prime them with the appropriate and suggested primers, apply the black or white aerosol wrinkle paints and top coat with a suitable brown.

Applying wrinkle paint can be a little tricky especially on object with lots of curves and recesses. Suspending or raising the objects to be painted on a box or even a large tin can helps. Figure three coats. The coating dries (flashes) quickly. The application method is to spray coat #1 one way, coat #2 crossways and coat #3 diagonally. Applying heat can promote the wrinkling this can be done in an oven or by a heat gun set on low. Too close or two high will blister the finish. Best IMO to practice on some similar surfaces before trying to do the finishes on your bike parts.

You might try the site for the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle forums in your search.

Great UK based site. The paint codes are here: http://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/BHondaPaintCodes.htm

Keep in mind that there is a disclaimer stating that the information has been gathered from several sources. There are also different methods of coding paints, coatings, names of colors ect., that run from the numerical to the fanciful.

Badbilly: Found 3 possibles, cyber gold, matte uranium & Kashmir beige. All other golds/browns/beiges were pearls, metallics or candies. Hunt goes on. Next visits to dealer and not-so-local paint supply.

Are what was found wrinkle paints or topcoats? If wrinkle paint, could you share the sources? If a topcoat over one of the readily available aerosol wrinkle coatings, small amounts of automotive paints are sometimes available from both automotive paint specialists and from NAPA stores that stock Martin-Senour paints. Martin-Senour is under the Sherwin-Williams umbrella.

There are a few paint manufacturers that do have bases that can be colorized.

The other site appears to be UK based..Go to the Honda section and one page shows a bunch of Honda paint codes with a disclaimer that the listings have come from diverse sources. In architectural paints a numerical system relating to the colorizing formula is used in paints from UK. Here, it's really nuts, especially the "names" of some of the colors.

Another confuser is that old trade names seem to stick around after the actual products are long gone or are only found in few places. One example is "varnish". Even worse. varnish can be a verb.. or gunk in a carb or one of Knights starter valves. Whoops.. "Gunk" is a product too..

Hey Bad: The paints I found (Y170M-cyber gold, GY126-matte uranium, YR169-kashmir beige) were not listed as being wrinkle, but then again none were. Also I answered my own question about the metal's texture. Found a chipped spot and underneath is SMOOTH silver metal. So it is definitely wrinkle paint or a topcoat over wrinkle coating (the latter a possibility I never thought of). The search goes on. Will search Martin-Senour.

The Martin-Senour auto paint source will provide several of the sand colors you need for a topcoat over the wrinkle paint. All NAPA stores do not have the paints. Look for one of the larger stores.

Are your doing a restoration or just sprucing up your 86?

This is a bit of a stretch... Wrinkle paint jobs were popular on some models of standard and electric typewriters. I can recall some brown, blue and green tones..

Badbilly: Latest development, three locals agree the brownish coating is powder coat. Being more of a DIY guy I'm going to pursue a wrinkle paint alternative. I can remember seeing a wrinkle brown on a typewriter. It's not a big restoration and a bit more than sprucing up. I've had to plastic weld several parts, replace others and get dents out of tank. Mechanicals next. Will look into your suggestion of NAPA paints. Thx.

Were the three locals powdercoaters? ;) The history of this technology accoding to Father Google is from aboot 1966. This would be post IBM Selectric in brown wrinkle. Did a few cases for electronics for a designer years ago. I used paint. The best on the market I found was some with the HD label.. Painted some rocker covers on a BMW with the same stuff.

I send any powdercoating I need done to a commercial outfit that does the plating ect. for Kenworth trucks. Lots of small boutique style powdercoaters and platers who charge more than the work is worth.

Sounds like you are handy.. Pix if you feel like it when ya "getter done."
