Hi guys. I have an interesting question regarding early delivery 1985 500 Interceptors. I am a huge fan of this motorcycle and owned one back when they were new. Though the bike was unchanged from 1984 to 1985, there were subtle graphics changes. In 1984, the red bike with blue accents had a blue stripe that wrapped all the way around the red on the front fairing. In 1985, this stripe only underlined the red on the fairing. A 1985 also said just "interceptor" on the side panels, while the 1984 had "500" stacked over "interceptor".

Here is where I need help. I am looking at a low mileage 1985 500 that the owner claims is comlpletely stock and has never been wrecked that has a front fairing with the wrap around stripe from 1984, instead of the proper underline only stripe from 1985. Is there any chance that early 1985 bikes still used the old wrap around stripe fairings until they were out, then switched to the underline stripe? I have never seen this before and expect it's some type of swap from an 84. Does anyone know if this ever came stock this way? Thanks

Pretty sure you can tell that the color of the stripe on upper cowl does not match the stripe of the tank. Did not come from Honda that way. 84 upper on an 85.

And I'm pretty sure the reds aren't even the same.

And 84 - 85 fenders were always white. Something going on there.

Thumbing through a back issue of Motorcyclist, I found this photo of an 500 they featured:

Don't know if this is any help, I guess you need to talk to an older Honda dealer that might remember. (the owner absolutely loves his bike, they are rare in good condition, don't stress over if it isn't entirely kosher.)

I missed the black fender and it's a dead giveaway. Your eye is even better than mine. Yeah, definitely non-original. Thanks for the input, I doubt I can trust 7k original miles also.

Is the owner the original owner or just un-informed?

That is an 85 with what appears to be an aftermarket lower fairing and custom seat.

Not original owner, it's at a dealer. I shouldn't have said owner. The dealer thought it was original.

Ah! A dealer! Obviously un-informed! Armed with what you learned here, go back and negotiate if you want it. Other threads have pointed out problems with early 500's, still a great little bike.
