I've posted this question up in a couple of sites w/o much feedback , so I'm asking here too. I'm planning a return trip to Oregon from San Diego in late June. It's a long round trip, so to make the first return day pretty easy, I plan to ride from San Diego to the Sacramento area on day one. I'm open to riding a bit further or less on day one, depending on suggestions. From that point on, I'm looking to ride any roads west of Hwy 5, north to Oregon over a 2 day period with one overnight stay. Too many unknown roads for me to choose blindly, so any help is appreciated.

The ride up Interstate 5 is so awful and heat will suck oot loud in late June, I would suggest jogging over on Hwy 101 in Los Angeles and ride all the way up the coast of California if you have that much time. It is a great ride and so much to see as well as avoiding the vile heat.

Unfortunately, time plays into my choice to ride the 5 to the Sacramento area. I know the ride's gonna be hot and boring, but I'm hoping to make up for it over the following 2 days. I've driven 101 from San Diego to San Francisco a few times, so I'm looking forward to other roads on my VFR. I'm not firm that Sacramento is my first lay over.

You don't mention where in OR, is it safe to assume Beaverton? Too many options and great roads.
I'd jump on I-15 to 395. It may be hot crossing the Mojave dessert, but once you leave 395 and head north on CA 89 you'll be rewarded with cooler weather and great roads all the way to south Lake Tahoe. From south Lake Tahoe the options are to stay on CA 89 and visit Lassen Volcanic National Park, Lava Beds National Monument, Crater Lake and make your way to Eugene. From Eugene I'd take OR 126 to Florence, or the Alsea highway (OR 34) I have ridden both and either of these roads are fun to ride.
Or from south Lake Tahoe I'd take CA 89 and CA 36 at Lake Almanor all the way to 101 and ride into the redwoods without bypassing Avenue of the Giants and take another photo of my bike through the trees.

    * I have not ridden CA 36 from Lake Almanor to Red Bluff, but I have from Red Bluff to Fortuna.
It all the depends on time available and what type of riding you like.

Never mind, just realized my suggestion is way off as you want suggestions from Sacramento.

I'd suggest maybe riding east of I-5 in OR. whatever way to get to crater lake, north to aufderheide, detroit lake, clackamas river 224 to estacada etc..

I'm hoping for suggestions west of Hwy 5 from around Sacramento. I've already planned my trip from Beaverton to San Diego via the Cascades, Coachella. The Aufderheide is a great ride BTW, I try to do that ride every other year via Estacada and Detriot Lake.

Good idea. Maybe State 20 at Newport would be good. If this works, check for closures on 20 going East. They are working on the highway.

Past Lincoln City is good too but Lincoln City can be a PITA to get through in June..

That's going to be some what out the way tricky no matter what, maybe get to Red bluff head west on 36, 101 home? North on 5 for a shorter bit to Williams then head west on 20 to 101. Or get to Woodland off 5, take 16 to 20 then to 101. if you happen to go out of Williams on 20, once at Clear lake find 175, now that road is a hoot and a half. It also intersects 101. and if you get tired of 101, then head back over to 5 around Eugene. just saying.

What would be interesting is to plot oot all the possible routes from point A to point B if there was no timeline involved.

Good idea to dodge I-5 though. I did a run 1 year south over Shasta and was drowning in sweat. No amount of open helmet or suit vents were helping. Stopped at Pollard Flat to grab some water, their little outdoor thermometer on the porch read 108.

Riding the 101 North in June can be so cool as to bring along some of the warm gear.

Been thorough Douglass City back in the day, I have no idea how much has changed , so??? Now Depending on "your" time line there really isn't a bad route in N.Ca. Now Eureka north, that's a crap shoot, traffic on 101 up the coast can be a real pain in the ass. again just depending on what kind of pass and what you prefer in a ride, are you there for the scenery? or the experience of the road, a little of both? any of the side routes through the hills are meh ok., So on that note, once again depending on "your" time line it's a point and shoot what ever you feel may be in you best interests. some of those decisions are made at the moment, god knows I've done that.
