    Hey guys,

I am doing another trip to CO this summer and I have a few friends going with me, but one of them wants to drive his truck out and then ride once in CO. I am trying to weigh the pros/cons but I wondered what experiences or opinions I could get on here. I am for riding out, because it's all part of the experience and it saves money in the long run, as well as a little pride. I don't necessarily think it's bad to truck across KS, but I don't know if it's really worth doing. My "truck" friend has a Vulcan, and apparently it's not optimally geared for highway riding. I'm trying to convince him to just dish out the $ for a better set of pulleys, but I am not in his shoes. Any advice is appreciated, as well as humor.
    Thanks!

Riding beats the crap out of driving any day and time. Also, any vulcan is set for highway riding.

Kansas is an exception to that rule.

"sorry, I can't ride across KS. my cruiser isn't geared for it" Suuuuuurreeeeee. I think your friend is politely trying to hint that he really doesn't want to ride across wasteland and sour his mood for another hundreds of miles in CO.

the buddy with the truck is an absolute genius. Count those thousands of grain elevators from the comfort of a cab with A/C.

In fact, you don't even need to leave home to get the kansas motorcycle experience. Sit on your bike in the garage, install a heater oscillating fan pointed at your face, tape this picture to your helmet visor and sit in there for 8 hours

Actually we've done this very thing, and it wasn't about the missing the ride down, it was for a back up for the ride back. in our case I5 ain't anything but a long stretch of concrete, that and we liked the idea of having a back up plane "If " where to happen. Then there's the other reason we wanted to be fresh for what was to come. Being for what I understand of KS. , this truck ride might not be such a bad idea.

Used to be when I wanted to ride my bike in Colorado, or any other place AFATG, I got on it and rode to where I wanted to ride. I've done thousands, couple hundred thousand probably, of miles of touring/traveling just to get out and ride. Now that I'm 66 I don't feel so bad about loading the bike in the toyhauler and going to where I want to ride and staying in the area and riding. Mostly I got tired of staying in motels and living out of a suitcase/saddlebags for a few weeks.

IMO unless you're over 60 or only have a short weekend to ride, there's no excuse for not riding where you want to go. JMO of course.

I've ridden I-5 many times, KS is on a whole other level of misery. Southern OR through Shasta is like riding through Shangri-La by comparison. Do you really want to be in the middle of KS with a fried R/R or something?

There isn't. Other than it will take Clem the tow truck driver another 3 hours to find your ass on rural route 1385713713.

    Now for OPs humor request:
the few moto shops that are in KS don't actually sell motorcycle tires. Supposedly just darkside kits, even for sports bikes. :potstir:

If you want to square off your tires faster, go for it.

My last trip to CO was in August and the heat was killer. Out in west Texas you have to slow to 45 for every little town and the progress is glacial. The road was so flat and straight for so long that I hit one turn and sort of freaked out for fear I was over cooking it. If I had it to do over (and if I had a truck that I thought would make it) I would haul. I don't have to prove that I can ride.

This. Also, no one's going to want to hear about your ride through one of the most boring places on earth. They'll probably want to hear all about Colorado. KS will probably just be a footnote of "well, it was flat....." Might as well just haul the bikes.

V4totour... awe.. but we unloaded in Yreka. We just didn't feel the need to waste energy just going south, Oly.wa to N-Ca was lame, done it to many times, beside all of us in the truck in this case a service van had a blast getting there talking our riding skills up over the other one. Good times. and you're right I5 from the ore-Ca border down through the Shasta area is awesome. in fact the whole Northern Cali area is just over the top when it comes to riding, the area has so much to offer, love it.

Doesn't anybody ride just to ride? I don't care where I ride as long as I'm on the bike. Some places are better than others, but any time on a bike beats the same time in a car/truck. And who rides so they can tell their buddies about it?

But I'm one of those people who could never figure out why you would trailer/truck your bike to a bike rally, like all those yahoos at Sturgis. After all it's pretty clear it's for motorcycles, well, cruiser motorcycles mostly. It's not like you'd be able to ride once you got there.

I guess it's just the difference between a hobby and a love. Generally you get tired of a hobby and move on or it becomes sporadic, doing something you love never tires.

Life's too short to ride across Kansas. While I'm the sort that usually says it's the ride not the destination, I make an exception for Kansas. Head wind going east and west. No thanks.

Just ride the damn motorcycle! Seriously though even if it is Kansas a day on the bike sure beats sitting in a cage...

Kansas is the exception especially if the wind is a gusting 30 mph CROSS wind.
