I got out to the shop on a Saturday night, after a full day. I was tired but determined to do the oil change. (I think I was too tired.) I pulled the fairing, being sure to have as much fun as possible pulling the fairing body clips. I drained the oil, changed the filter but managed to misread the evil sight window and I over filled it. I pulled the drain plug again and dropped a quart out. Put the fairing back on and managed to dislodge a well nut. Spent 15 minutes trying to reinstall something never meant to be reinstalled. I made a mess of it and managed to get it back in. It fell out as I was tightening the screw but I did manage to get it to make up. I did the chain maintenance and took up a little slack. I took it out yesterday for a ride on a day that the temperature high was 50. It was not very pleasant. Today I find out the I rode over 150 miles, with speeds, at times in the triple digits with the bike probably a pint over full. Damn it!!I think I am losing my mind.

BJ, I don't think a pint over is going hurt anything. I notice on my 8th gen that the oil totally disappears after you start it, so there has to be some leeway there, it's when there is insufficient air space above the oil that causes the damage.

If you start the bike the oi level drops to be half in the sight glass window with the bike sitting level.

From now on I am going to buy my oil by the individual quart or I am going to get a plastic jug and put marks on it so I can pre-measure the amount of oil. Plus it would help if i did the work with my head pulled out of my ass.

3.4 quarts Jim, not 4 ;) but then you knew that huh. I just did an oil change myself for the first time in a while, I knew I needed 4 Qts. but not quit, so put like 3.7 in, saw it a bit high in the sight glass started it up thinking ok it'll go down once it has reticulated around, nope, to much, so a quick let some out, now its fine. Now it's wrote down. Now as far as what I did? not much, waiting for parts :)

Many riders who should know better still think the sightglass, or dipstick are to be checked with the bike on the sidestand.

My Service Books says 3.9 US Quarts for the VTR but I could be losing my mind. I am still not quite sure. Like I said, I think I am going to get a dedicated clean clear plastic jug and make marks and label them for the appropriate bike.

That was why I messed up. The Superhawk VTR is 3.9 us quarts and the Interceptor VFR is 3.4 with filter. I got confused because I have both bikes and apparently I can't tell them apart.
