Well I got it up on the lift this weekend. Some how I knocked it out of neutral and now its stuck in gear. Makes moving it a little harder but I have some good friends. I took the left side cover off so I could turn the motor over. I can get a half turn or so with it in gear. The first couple times moving back and forth sent a fountain of water out of the rear left cylinder. I need to get it out of neutral I don't have a lot of experience with hydraulic clutches. I'm not sure if the plates could be stuck or just need fluid and bleeding. I want to know if the electric system has been compromised and cant crank it to test for spark intill i can get it in to neutral.

You should be able to wiggle the crank/geartrain enough to slip it back in neutral.

If not that is a BIG clue you should not be attempting to turn the engine over. Shift drum or other components may be partially seized or dry.

If that fails you need to cut the drive chain off, I'm guessing it's toast after the flood anyway.

CNY is my old stomping ground, loved riding Ilion & Frankfort Gorges (Rt 51 & 171 IIRC)

Fountain of water out of the left rear cylinder, motor out and a total strip down, no point in doing anything else at this stage

I didn't think of using the crank to slip it in to gear that makes alot of sense. Blond moment I guess. Ya the gorge use to be great but it hasn't been maintained in a long time I learned how to "ride" my katana down that road.

I'm guessing the way you quoted "ride" it may have resulted in an incident?

I think the last I rode there was around 2010, and yeah surface conditions were not great.

But yes like Norm said, any water in the engine means you are looking at a full teardown unfortunately.

Any electrical issues will become apparent as you get into the guts, that should not be a primary concern right now :)

Im just afraid if the electrical system is fried a tear down wont be worth it.

Ride was quoted because of the corners. When I first started to ride the guy i road with did nothing but bar hop or highway riding took me a few years to discover the joys of a twisty road.

The electrics are the least of your worries, there may be a whole host of other internal issues. Electrics are a cheap fix, the mechanics are not.

Your best case scenario right now is a minimum of honing, possibly re-boring, and a full ring set.

The mechanicals are going to be your litmus test for going forward with the project, not the electrics.

Yeah I've also ridden with barhoppers, not the ones to learn to ride with for sure!

To all the guys who know the early generation motors, isn't the '83 one that had cam issues?

It might be wise to start looking for a donor motor now, otherwise you might want to pass on the project. I'm sorry but that is the reality.

The bike was given to me. Donor motor isn't out of the question. But I have nothing to loss and nothing invested yet.

That's the silver lining no doubt!

And I'm sure I don't have to say it, the moment of truth is here...

Commit or decline, she's asking for your hand.

Are you confident this is "the one"?

I spent 20 yrs on one I wasn't sure about, but she (CB750F) and I made it work, not many people can say the same I reckon :)

I completely understand the sentiment, at the same time that makes this project far from "free"

Be very careful how much emotional investment you make, on his part or yours.

Perspective, this is a machine, not a human life. Whatever you choose we will try and help!

    Philosopher mode off :)
